Eighty years ago today, thousands of young men, barely out of their teens, stormed the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. These brave souls, many of whom were drafted, faced unimaginable horrors to fight for the freedoms we cherish today. As we remember their courage and sacrifice, it's impossible not to draw parallels to our current world and the ongoing discussions about resuming national service in the UK. These young men of D-Day had their lives ahead of them, yet they stepped up in the face of tyranny and oppression. Their bravery was not just a matter of duty but of a deep-seated belief in a better future. Today, as we watch the conflict in Ukraine, we are reminded that the fight for freedom and justice is far from over. The resilience and determination we see in the Ukrainian people echo the spirit of those who fought on the beaches of Normandy. There's been a lot of talk recently about the UK bringing back national service. This idea stirs up mixed emotions. On one hand, it reminds us of a time when our country stood united against a common enemy, with everyone playing a part in the effort. On the other hand, it makes us reflect on the heavy burden placed on the shoulders of the young. Remembering D-Day is not just about honoring the past; it's about learning from it. The young men who fought in World War II taught us the value of unity, sacrifice, and standing up for what is right. These are lessons that resonate today as we navigate the complexities of our modern world. As we consider the idea of national service, let's remember the sacrifices of those who came before us. Let's think about how we can instill a sense of duty and resilience in our young people without repeating the mistakes of the past. The legacy of D-Day should inspire us to find ways to protect our freedoms and support those fighting for theirs, just as the brave soldiers did eighty years ago. By honoring their memory, we ensure that their sacrifices were not in vain. Let's commit to building a future where the values they fought for continue to thrive, and where every generation understands the importance of protecting our hard-won freedoms.

Destructive Devices, Explosives & ITAR Consultant/Expert Witness | Entrepreneur | Firearms, Ordnance & Less-Lethal Manufacturer, Importer, Exporter & Dealer
Devan warns people that my sardonic misanthropy isn’t an act & Chris knows I’d rather immolate myself than go to SHOT Show after-parties even with a free, All-You-Can-Snort Colombian bam-bam buffet. It’s not that I’m shy or anything. I just don’t like humans. Like that Hair Club for Men guy in the 90’s, I don’t just play a socially awkward autist with an obscure sense of humor on Ordnance Lab, I’m one in real life too. Back in what feels like a different lifetime, if someone didn’t want to geek out over dorky things like #Philosophy, #History beyond bickering & arguing about who killed who in some stupid battle, or gun collecting; I’d try to do poor imitation of a normal human, while seriously considering faking a seizure to get away from humans trying to make small talk. Thankfully I’ve largely completed my goal of not having to talk to or interact with people I don’t want to, not having to pretend to be normal or that I care what tedious people have to say, and find the consequences for telling people I think are incompetent morons that I think they’re incompetent morons very acceptable (especially for the US Army & United States Army Reserve). Yet here in Germany, I sincerely enjoy talking with people. Both Texas Machine-Gun & Ordnance customers who have become great friends over the years & strangers. Germans certainly can be dour, cold, rule-obsessed, closeted David Hasselhoff loving weirdos. But most also laugh about Germans being dour, cold, rule-obsessed weirdos (nobody wants to talk about the Hoff). As Matthias pointed out, Germans hated COVID’s social distancing because they had to stay 1m away from other people, not the usual 3m away. Contrast that to the US, where people pretend to have a sense of humor, & tough skin. Until you tell farmers they’re the real welfare kings, or uniformed bureaucrats that United States Department of Defense is primarily a #Government #Jobs & benefits distribution program. Or point out to fellow “gun people” that clinging to garbage-tier AR-15s & nutty conspiracy theories doesn’t make you a “patriot”. Then they typically quit laughing. #Texas will always be home. Mostly because I have my own small piece of it where I don’t have to interact with humans I don’t want to. But I very much enjoy it here in #Germany, even if #Germans are dour, cold, rule-obsessed, closeted David Hasselhoff loving weirdos. In their own way, to me they’re quite fun; dour, cold, rule-obsessed, closeted David Hasselhoff loving weirdos. I could never live here again. But I can get a whole year’s worth of social interaction knocked out in a few days & feel no need to speak with anyone again for the rest of the year.
