🏗✨ We need action to bring major regeneration projects forward more quickly. That’s according to our CEO and Co-Chair of the True North network, Robert White, who has spoken to Insider Media about the roadblocks that such projects face and the negative impact this is having on the North’s prosperity. “In addition to the time and cost involved in securing the funding for major projects in the first place, communities in the North appear to also be facing increased bureaucracy throughout the development process”, says Robert. "Feedback from stakeholders in the property and construction industry — particularly at our quarterly Building Links networking events for business leaders — is that the planning system is one of the biggest hindrances to development projects across all sectors. Expanding public transport infrastructure around the city and connecting local markets could be combined with measures to densify Leeds. Highly productive cities tend to be denser. Densification of the existing suburbs across Leeds to build more family housing may form part of the solution, alongside providing family housing outside of Leeds in the neighbouring markets.

We are delighted to see the launch of the UK Urban Futures report alongside the leaders from the Core Cities, Chairs and Commissioners from the UK Urban Futures team and of course, the The RSA (The royal society for arts, manufactures and commerce) themselves. The actions and recommendations of the report are consistent with PwC UK’s vision of the UK and the purpose that we stand for as a firm. Delivering a broad yet inclusive and regenerative growth is vital to replenishing the UK’s nested systems. Having distinctive, local and place-based strategies which recognises the heart of the issues that Core Cities and local authorities are facing is critical to building solutions that are more effective. Recognising the comparative advantage that Core Cities have and supporting them in capitalising this is consistent with our ideas on what the UK needs to do to level-up.

Improving, creating and connecting urban green spaces is an investment in our health and quality of life – and in the economic and social future of our towns and cities. Indeed, the value of our accessible green spaces in the towns and cities of the North of England is worth at least £2.7bn to the economy every year. However, here at Nature North we know there is potential to unlock even greater benefits with more investment. A study published today, commissioned by National Trust and Nature North made possible thanks to National Lottery Heritage Funding, shows we need new approaches and collaborations to make it happen. #naturerecovery #urbangreenspace #naturebasedsolutions Thinks Insight and Strategy listened to ideas and experiences from a wide range of organisations and the public. But as well as hearing examples of successful green space projects across the region, they also heard frustration that structural challenges and lack of investment are getting in the way of making a bigger difference. In many places in the North of England public green spaces are in danger of decline. And Natural England figures show that around a half of people don’t have the Government’s recommended access to green space within 15 minutes. This means they’re missing out on the benefits of green spaces, further compounding existing inequalities. The report suggests a range of ways to move from isolated examples of great green spaces to joined-up, larger-scale support that breathes fresh life into our towns and cities. Achieving this will take investment, ambition and collaboration, and working closely with communities to meet local needs. We'll need new partnerships, innovative approaches to funding and land management, and to harness cross-sector expertise and passion. Thanks to all that have contributed to the research so far. Some great insights in the Hines mid-year Research report issued this week. Stong evidence emerging that there are significant "green shoots" in the investment market. (link below). Of particular relevance to Ireland is external validation of the scale of housing output we need to build to meet societies needs. (see table below from the report). The Housing Commission report highlighted that in considerable detail last month and we hope that the draft NPF, due imminently reflects this reality and does not seek to "cap" housing output!!
