As we near the end of Mental Health Awareness Month, let's focus on the well-being of older adults not just this month but every day. By 2030, 1 in 6 people will be over 60. Around 14% of seniors live with mental health disorders, often under-recognized and untreated. Seniors often face unique challenges like loneliness, loss of loved ones, and health issues, which can impact their mental well-being. Prioritizing mental health helps maintain cognitive function, emotional balance, and overall quality of life. Supportive environments, regular social interactions, and access to mental health care are key. Let's ensure our elders lead happy, healthy lives. Approximately 14% of those aged 60 years or older are predicted to encounter various forms of mental health issues (WHO, 2023). The prevalent conditions encompass anxiety, profound cognitive impairment, and mood disorders, such as depression or bipolar disorder. Mental health issues frequently have a role in occurrences of suicide. Men in the older age bracket exhibit the most elevated rate of suicide compared to other age groups (CDC, 2021). The suicide rate for men aged 85 years or older is 55.7 per 100,000, whereas the overall average for all age groups is 14.04 per 100,000 (AFSP, 2021). These statistics show how important it is to involve the geriatric population in mental health conversations and bring awareness to the services that are here to assist! #geriatricmentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #LTCpsychservices #seniorservices #suicideprevention https://lnkd.in/eCHi-jVZ. https://lnkd.in/eZBn5dsZ https://lnkd.in/eSJqDr3R

According to the WHO, approximately 14% of adults aged 60 and over live with a mental disorder. The world’s population is ageing fast. In 2020, 1 billion people in the world were aged 60 years or over. That figure will rise to 1.4 billion by 2030, representing one in six people globally. Older adults contribute to society as family and community members, and many are volunteers and workers. So, while most have good health, many are at risk of developing mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety disorders. 1 in 4 older adults in Europe, North America & Central Asia have depression. Access to go mental health care is a fundamental right, yet often overlooked in older populations. Risk factors come from environmental conditions like retirement, bereavement, chronic illness, social isolation, and ageism. Depression is at rates 20-35% for those aged 60 , significantly higher in older women, and increases with age, exceeding 50% in some countries for those 80 . Public awareness, integrating mental health into primary care, training healthcare professionals in geriatric mental health, and offering specialized services for older adults are starting places. #MentalHealth #HealthPolicy #AgingPopulations

🌼 Nurturing Mental Health as We Age 🌼 Let's pause and talk about something crucial—our mental health as we journey through the years. 🌈 Aging brings its own set of challenges, but we must remember that emotional well-being is just as important as physical health. 💭✨ It's concerning that despite effective treatments being available, a lot of older adults remain undiagnosed and untreated. This not only impacts individual lives but also influences healthcare costs on a larger scale. 🏥💰 Let's address the issue of loneliness. A small gesture like a chat or a visit can make a world of difference for a senior dealing with this silent struggle. 🗣️❤️ Depression and anxiety don't discriminate based on age. Seeking help is a sign of strength, and support is always available. 🤝💪 So, as we navigate life's journey, let's prioritize our mental well-being alongside our physical health. By fostering awareness and understanding, we can create a community that embraces every stage of life with compassion. 🌱🤗 #TAMUS #MentalHealthMatters #AgingWell #StrongMindStrongLife https://lnkd.in/e--tCjbk
