It’s time for all stakeholders, including brands, manufacturers, and local governments, to join forces and take action. We need to prioritize raising awareness and educating consumers about recyclable materials and the recycling process. In 2023 the UK collected and recycled more aluminium packaging than ever before. According to annual data published on the National Packaging Waste Database by the Environment Agency, the UK’s aluminium packaging recycling rate hit an impressive 68% in 2023. A record-breaking 162,357 tonnes were recycled nationwide, including more than four in five beverage cans (81%). Despite a rapidly growing domestic market, aluminium packaging collected through kerbside, bring and on-the-go systems increased by 13% year-on-year (115,382, compared to 102,195 in 2022). Elsewhere, tonnage recovered from incinerator bottom ash (IBA) shot up by 17% (45,632 compared to 38,982). The total amount of aluminium recycled from cans reached a record level of 570,000 tonnes in 2021, an increase of 60,000 tonnes compared to the previous year, saving 4,7 million tonnes of CO2eq. Aluminium is a permanent material, meaning it can be recycled multiple times through high-quality recycling processes without losing its inherent properties. The latest report from Metal Packaging Europe and European Aluminium reveals a significant leap in aluminium beverage can recycling across the EU, UK, Switzerland, Norway, and Iceland, achieving a record 76.1% recycling rate, marking an increase of 3.2%. This surge resulted in the recycling of 570,000 tonnes of aluminium from cans—an uplift of 60,000 tonnes from the previous year, facilitating a greenhouse gas emissions reduction of 4.7 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent. Industry leaders are advocating for more ambitious separate collection targets and the implementation of Deposit Return Systems to enhance "can-to-can" recycling. Highlighting aluminium's potential for repeated high-quality recycling without losing its inherent properties, the industry aims for 100% circularity of aluminium beverage cans by 2050, emphasising its role in achieving Net Zero 2050 objectives. Sorting and recycling plastics and metals from mixed waste streams – and not relying solely on material-dedicated collection systems – results in double the reduction of CO2 equivalent (CO2 e) emissions. Firstly, by avoiding primary production and secondly, by mitigating unnecessary and toxic burning of plastics. By comparing a tonne of residual MSW sent directly to Landfill, versus a tonne of residual MSW being sorted in facilities like Glanway which extract valuable recyclables and sends the remaining residual material to Waste-to-Energy, the emissions saved from MWS were 309KG of CO2(Eunomia, 2021). Based on predicted figures for 2023, Glanway look set to increase their hard plastics(PET,HDPE,PP) sent for recycling by 104% compared to 2022 results and will save almost 600 tonnes of CO2e from hard plastics alone.

Where there's muck there's brass. Or in this case aluminium. Q3 data shows uplift in UK aluminium packaging recycling. Aluminium packaging recycling volumes in Q3 continued to increase, showing a 21% increase compared to 2022. According to recent data published on the National Packaging Waste Database (NPWD) by the Environment Agency, during the three-month period (Jul-Sep), 48,135 tonnes of aluminium packaging were collected for recycling – a 21% increase year-on-year. https://lnkd.in/eqgxey5A

Congratulations to the European Parliament on agreeing its position on the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) yesterday! The agreement paves the way to make deposit return schemes for highly recyclable aluminium beverage cans the norm across Europe and supports the advancement of high recycled content and fully recyclable packaging solutions, including aluminium coffee capsules. Novelis has been calling for both of these measures that are vital to drive the circular economy and keep strategic raw materials like aluminium in Europe.
