Last month I took the difficult decision to leave Accurx. I did some work there I’m really proud of - in particular, leading a team that built Accurx’s new web inbox for primary, secondary, and other care settings - but ultimately, I didn’t have the opportunity there to utilise all my skills, and I’m looking for a bigger challenge. If you’re a brand new startup, I can help you make your first few engineering hires and give them light touch coaching to help set them up for success. If you’re preparing to grow your engineering team, I can help make sure you have the right tech, people, processes, and infrastructure in place to grow safely while maintaining velocity. We don’t need more apps we need to shift away from mono crop agriculture, factory farming and stop producing junk food. It doesn’t matter how many apps we have. Plant based is also a marketed term that 1000% doesn’t equate to health. Raw beef liver, raw dairy, raw honey, grass fed wild meat. Those are the healthiest foods on the planet. However, the way our society is set up we subsidize corn and soy so we can make Doritos and cooking oil. Then we tell people with propaganda that butter and meat cause cancer and heart disease when in fact processed seed oil and sugar do. What’s the solution? It’s not an app.

Meta, Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, and Microsoft have profoundly influenced the business landscape by championing the use of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in software development across various industries. Engineers like myself are mandated to provide precise estimates and performance predictions, with questions such as 'How many points?' consistently guiding our planning processes. However, in their rush to promote AI technology amidst industry-wide layoffs, these companies have paradoxically obliterated an entire generation of software professionals and their motivation. In doing so, they have severed the evolutionary link that has historically led to solutions that meet the current demands of the software industry, choosing instead to start from scratch—without any forecasts or accountability. This is particularly hypocritical given their longstanding emphasis on metrics and accountability. How will AI technology impact us? What should we expect in terms of results? How are checks and balances being implemented? Without transparent and measurable indicators, we risk navigating this transformative era blindly, potentially repeating historic mistakes akin to those of Enron, Philip Morris, or ongoing resistance to change within oil companies. It is crucial that the initiatives these tech giants promote be subjected to the same level of accountability that they have historically demanded from the engineers building these systems. They should be required to publish estimates and result predictions in the public domain before launching such initiatives. It’s time to define the KPIs for AI to ensure it effectively serves our societal goals.

Google had layoffs yesterday. Among the teams impacted were the Voice Assistant teams. As AI and LLM's progress there are some areas that will be impacted much quicker than others. A helpful framework for understanding this is the 6 layers of Vehicle Automation. They range from No Automation to Full Automation. Level 3 is Conditional Automation - the machine is in charge but humans are required to be ready to take over if the machine insists. We see this to some extent in Accounting today. Computers handle the calculations but if something doesn't add up, an audit is requested. The bulk of work shifted from having to run calculations to making sense of calculations and intervening when necessary. There are parts of Software that are 'drudgery' that LLM's can easily replace (ex. writing test cases and simpler coding tasks). The work that'll remain is determining how best to solve a problem with code (algorithmic) and how to structure things appropriately (architectural). These seismic shifts happen quicker than most think imo. Companies will never hesitate to save money if they can. Entrepreneurs that build solutions will be quick to make the case that X% can be saved if their AI powered tool is used for Y.
