One such startup that I met is Tatum Robotics which is developing a robotic hand that DeafBlind people use to communicate. I had the opportunity to test their product. 𝗔 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀, 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝘀, 𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆! Driving regulations in India and across the globe contain enabling provisions to grant driving licenses to such individuals. Advancements in legislation and vehicle technology are making it increasingly possible for disabled persons to take the wheel with confidence. 𝗦𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲? This accessibility space recognises a wide range of vehicle adaptations and modifications that cater to various physical needs. From custom controls to support hand-operated driving to vehicles equipped with advanced assistive technologies, the road has never been more welcoming. Innovative vehicle modifications include: * Voice-activated systems * Adapted foot pedals, accelerators, handles * Efficient steering turns * Wheelchair-accessible vehicles 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀: Stories abound of individuals who have overcome their physical limitations to master the art of driving - Anita Sharma, Jilumol Mariet and more recently, D Thanesan, to name a few. UK Govt Disability Action Plan - Top 3 Takeaways The Cabinet Office Disability Unit published today its 32-point plan for short- and long-term actions Govt will take to improve the lives of disabled people in the UK. Please see THIIS Magazine's coverage at https://thiis.co.uk/ for an excellent in-depth summary. The direction of travel is positive and welcome, but there's little in the way of immediate help on top issues like cost of living, challenges with the benefits system, and the ongoing social care crisis. For my money, the top 3 takeaways for BHTA members are: Improve information and outcomes for families in which someone is disabled (Actions 12-14): BHTA's Children's Equipment section in particular will want to see tangible progress here, especially as the "rubber" of statutory services meets the "road" of Govt and Council cost pressures. Help businesses to understand the needs and deliver improvements for disabled people (Actions 18-19): All BHTA sections will have an opportunity to lead the way, as experts in the sector, as UK plc fulfills its role in making the UK a world leader in accessibility and disability opportunity. Research issues facing disabled people in the future (Action 26): Again, all BHTA sections can make essential contributions in this area, based on their broad and deep experiences of serving the sector. Along with other trade association partners, BHTA will continue to identify contribution opportunities and hold Govt to account on deliverables from this action plan.
