𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗜 𝗴𝗼? I am in London this week; meeting people who want to leave. As the World is now truly open for business, and life’s routine has returned post Covid, it’s a good time to seek life and career opportunities elsewhere. I feel like travel agent – and have candidates interested in Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong & Australia – it’s been lovely to see excitement in their eyes when they realise that such a move is possible and that their skills are in demand. 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙨 𝙄 𝙙𝙞𝙨𝙘𝙪𝙨𝙨 𝙖𝙧𝙚: 1. Prioritise the location based on the stage of life you are at. For some the financial benefits of Asia and Middle East will trump the outdoor life of Australia. Those with children need to factor in schools and childcare whilst others want to explore regions/countries and treat the experience as an overseas adventure. 2. Don’t hang onto the idea that the move internationally will also equal a promotion (it might; but that shouldn’t be a deal breaker) – the main reason for the move should be life experience. 3. Factor in ease (and cost) of getting home in emergencies. For some leaving elderly relatives – Asia is preferable to Australia/New Zealand. 4. Visas and working rights – Asia & Middle East are far easier to gain sponsorship than Australia/New Zealand depending on your age. Everyone has a different reason for leaving – and mostly its pull, not push. I use the reframe “you are moving to…” rather than “I am leaving …”.
