For example, remote work boosts employees’ job satisfaction and commitment to their organizations. The flexibility of remote work allows them to better manage their work-life balance, leading to more positive attitudes towards their jobs and employers. Additionally, remote work enhances employees’ feelings of support from their organizations. Why are remote workers so much angrier than hybrid or office based workers? Gallup's 2023 State of the Global Workplace looks for the first time at employee engagement by work location. And tucked away in there are some stats which show, globally, exclusively remote workers are 40% more likely to have "experienced anger for a lot of the day yesterday" than people who go into the workplace. Hybrid work, despite being declared the best of all worlds, is somewhere in between. And the research suggests that both hybrid and remote workers are slightly more likely than workplace based ones to have experienced stress a lot of the day, irrespective of how engaged they are in their jobs. Why might this be so? Well one explanation may be that people who prefer remote work are by nature angrier than those who enjoy being with others. Certainly the most vitriolic commenters on posts where I've suggested one size doesn't fit all have come from people advocating permanent remote work for all. Forever. It may be a function of the type of work done by people in the different locations: more senior, high pressured stuff may be being done remotely/in a hybrid pattern The anger may be coming from people forced to work remotely who would actually rather be in the office: always acknowledge it's not all one way traffic But I'd like to think that, despite all the claims that remote or hybrid working is better for your mental health, there are moments when being amongst real people can be better still. Like when that demanding client kicks off or Colin in accounts behaves like a twat. Having people around you who can deflect your stress or anger with humour or words of support is something you really won't find in your spare room. #remotework #workplacewellbeing #angerissues #hybridworking #employeeengagement #bettertogether

How we manage remote work is the issue, not where we work. However, the dirty secret for a fairly large percentage of remote workers is the exploitation of opportunities to work multiple jobs (doubling or tripling income). These individuals perform at a “good enough” pace while splitting their time between companies… and maximizing their income. There isn’t any regard for climbing the corporate ladder, and why should they be concerned? If salaries can be doubled or tripled without competing for higher, advanced, or leadership roles (and the responsibility that comes with it)… where is the incentive? That being said, there are many extremely productive employees (and over achievers) that work from home .. for one company. The work life balance offered to them is a valuable bargaining chip for retention. Management skills and approach need to be reevaluated and overhauled for this new productivity landscape.
