🎯What skill would a young person entering your organisation need to thrive? We were finding out this very thing at the CeeD Awards on the 29th February in Glasgow. At Powering Futures we are passionate about giving the Next Generation the skills and opportunity to own their own sustainably active and economically prosperous future. 💪🌍 👀From our experience directly within the classroom, we have found that ‘It’s hard to be what you can’t see’, and understanding what the skills needed to access opportunities is equally difficult. We’re tackling this challenge head on, by systematically connecting businesses and education across the country. As part of this, we partnered with CeeD (Centre for Engineering, Education and Development) on the 29th to talk to 600 attendees from a variety of backgrounds, exploring the opportunities within their organisations. We discussed what initially attracted them to and subsequently motivated them to remain with their current employer, and the skills they thought essential for the Next Generation joining their respective organisations. 🤔Have you thought about what your answer to these same questions would be? As higher education rankings become increasingly competitive, demonstrating commitment and impact towards sustainability is crucial. Beyond asking about initiatives put in place to promote sustainability, rankings want to see how institutions are measuring the impact of those efforts. Sometimes, all it takes is a conversation, an exchange, or a simple remark to grasp the obviousness of the battles we wish to fight, or rather, to understand how we might be able to change the system. Over fifteen years ago, I was the Director of Sustainability at a French business school. My general director at the time—who was a true supporter of the projects I led—shared this observation with me: 💬 "You know JC, that every time I follow your advice, and we manage to get some students to professionally commit to building a sustainable world, by becoming social entrepreneurs, for example, or working for an NGO, well, I'm not rewarded. I'm even punished!" He then explained a hard truth: 💡 "The likelihood of these people earning an enormous salary, exceeding that of those working in finance or consulting, is relatively low. And since our school’s ranking in national and international rankings today is primarily based on the salary our graduates earn, we risk dropping in the rankings every time we train students interested in something other than financial gain. He added: "And of course, my board of directors evaluates my work, particularly through the lens of these rankings." That day, I realized that if we didn’t change the way we evaluate the performance of higher education institutions by integrating their societal impact, we would only be making marginal adjustments. 📊 In a previous article, we mentioned how the rankings had taken up the topic (“Measure what is measurable, and make measurable what is not so” - link in the comments). One of the most challenging aspects of meeting AOL criteria is to evidence for sustainability built into curriculum. Sulitest can be an much easier solution to ensure your students are equipped with the right skill set for the modern world.

Week 2 in the AHUA Exec Director role….. I met with a team of associates to review plans for the next ‘Aspiring Registrar and COO Program’ cohort including exploring how we can establish bursaries for applicants of colour. We are making a few more tweaks to the program and registration process and should be opening for applications in the next week along with final details of the scholarships. A full membership update on development programs and opportunities for the year ahead will go out next week. I accompanied AHUA Executive member Helen to a meeting with UUK regarding the latest EHRC advice on mental health and how universities might best react to developing case law. We took the chance to check in on a range of sector developments and issues. I continued various induction meetings with the chance to meet various friends and colleagues to hear their experiences working with AHUA and the sector including meeting some of our superb Coaching associates and our governance Associate Seamus, 2 Registrars, friends at AMOSSHE and a range of policy directors from various organisations. Rich discussion about everything from how our members support the first 100 days of a new VC, experiences of ‘leaving-well’  when senior roles leave institutions, ways to enhance membership value, key national partners for policy development and more. I also got to snoop around some of the most gorgeous buildings at the University of Manchester. More work on shortlisting a huge range of proposals for an exciting new research project looking at the experiences of people of colour working in university professional services. As well as shortlisting we have been securing a range of EDI specialist expertise to support the work of the reference group who will steer the project once we confirm the successful project bid. I spent some time with the Executive chair working through lots of preparation for our first exec meeting and our next national conference, both taking place next month and when I get a real chance to start to explore agendas for the year ahead. We talked through a number of perspectives about changing membership needs and how that might influence our work, ways of working with sector bodies that show leadership and membership perspective. I continue to be grateful for the warm welcome and impressed with the level of ambition and optimism despite a challenging environment.
