I have thoughts. Thank you to Stand Together for posting this provocative piece. As you can expect, I agree and disagree.
I agree: the cost of college is not tied to its value, full stop. The root of this decoupling can be debated, but the end result is clear: mountains of student debt, lack of equity in opportunity for jobs, and a misunderstanding of the role of continued education. Every young person should be prepared to enter society as an adult in meaningful ways, for themselves and others. We are missing the mark as the existing post-secondary system is a leaky ship, letting the most vulnerable of us sink.
I disagree: the value of a liberal arts education as a means of economic mobility, civics, and self-empowerment is proven, time and time again. 18, 19, 20, and 21 year olds - especially those from low-access, opportunity-poor backgrounds - benefit from the increased choice that comes from self-exploration. This empowers young learners to seek out who they want to become and what they want to do with their time, which betters themselves, the communities they belong to, and society overall. We all become better when we adopt a #growthmindset and developmentally, young adulthood is critical to that process.
The solution is simple in theory: it comes down to #access and #choice.
Expanding access and choice - to degrees, credentials, jobs, continued learning opportunities etc. - should be the goal of public and private institutions in the education space.
This explains the biggest hurdles we face today.
- Not enough young people can explore life in all of its grandeur
- Not enough young people can feel engaged in the communities that they often don't choose to be a part of
- Not enough young people can find pathways to jobs that build generational wealth
Overcoming these hurdles is within reach, it always will be, with determined effort, investment, and time. Every moment is an opportunity to change everything for the better.

2moProud to be part of this company. Recently looking up some HVAC certifications at a tech college for a friends child. Was so proud to see Trane Technologies supporting that program in lowly ole Kansas. Love to learn more how I can help promote these programs.
