Set your goals and spend sufficient time planning and training staff members to achieve them. 💹 But how do you measure the success of a trade show? Only 24% of exhibitors set measurable objectives. There are two key ways to gauge effectiveness: Return on Investment (ROI) and Return on Objective (ROO). While ROI is simpler, ROO helps you assess broader value from the event, ensuring you're not just focusing on immediate sales. Consider both to truly understand your trade show success. Some might argue that the internet has everything we need, and our dedicated staff can handle it all. While that's true to an extent, there's an undeniable magic that happens when we step out from behind our desks and immerse ourselves in the world of trade shows. According to a study published by AUMA - Association of the German Trade Fair Industry in 2015, these are the top things visitors to German trade shows try to achieve: To look for innovations and trends (67%), procure information (64%), exchange information and experiences (56%), further their knowledge and maintain existing business relationships (48%), market observation (42%), preparing to buy after the show (32%), buying at the exhibition (26%). While I advise exhibitors to do their best to help visitors achieve those goals - being approachable, tailoring their pitch to specific visitor needs, bringing along exhibits, if possible, etc. - I also request visitors to keep in mind what exhibitors try to achieve and to put some thought into how to make their lives easier. For example, as an exhibitor, I find it difficult when a visitor requests, "Tell me about your products," but refuses to give me some context, like their background or special interest (e.g., a particular application or problem they want to solve). "I want to talk to someone from Sales" may also not be the best entry line when approaching the counter at a bigger booth. Contact Exhibitors: Many exhibitors update their social media profiles during the fair, sharing product information and promotions. Reach out to them through social media, email, or online chat to ask questions and establish connections. 3. Participate in Online Discussions: Some fairs create dedicated discussion groups or hashtags on social media platforms. Join these discussions to interact with other attendees and exhibitors, share your perspectives, and gain more insights. 4. Research Fair Background: Before the fair begins, delve into background information about the event, including its themes, industry trends, and the list of exhibitors. This will help you better understand the focus and objectives of the fair. 5. Obtain Product Catalogs: Fairs typically provide product catalogs that include exhibitor information and product listings. You can search for these online or request a digital or printed copy to learn more about the exhibitors' products and contact details. 6. Attend Online Seminars and Webinars: Some fairs offer the opportunity to attend online seminars and webinars. Participating in these events can help you gain industry insights and professional knowledge. 7. Connect with Local Representatives: If you have local representatives or friends at the fair, stay in touch with them to seek feedback and insights on the actual situation at the event. They can help you understand the on-ground experience. 8. Document and Summarize: After the fair, summarize the information and experiences you've gathered. This will assist you in future participation in similar events or in taking appropriate actions. The German trade fair industry is starting into the new year with strong tailwind. At least 330 trade fairs are planned for 2024 in Germany, of which 180 are leading fairs. According to initial estimates at least 180,000 exhibiting companies and 11.5 million visitors were guests at German exhibition grounds in 2023. This represents an increase of around 40,000 exhibitors and almost four million visitors compared to the figures of the previous year. Following the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, international leading trade fairs in Germany particularly have recovered well.
