No I in TEAM, but there’s a ME! September has been an incredible month for team golf, and it's got me thinking – do we play enough team formats in our regular amateur golf clubs? We're about to be indulged with what I’m sure will be a thrilling Women's Solheim Cup, the fierce competition of the Ryder Cup in the Men’s game, and let's not forget the Walker Cup earlier this month. LIV has a team element, Presidents Cup…Team golf has been taking center stage, showcasing the camaraderie, strategy, and passion that make the sport even more captivating. But when we look beyond these elite events, it's worth asking: do amateur golfers get enough opportunities to experience the joys of team play? Traditionally, team golf has been associated with better players, those with low handicaps, county-level competitors, and tour professionals. The Golf Foundation's GolfSixes League concept is a fantastic initiative designed to bring the team format to beginner kids. It's all about catering to what kids want from golf. By introducing a team approach from the get go, we're nurturing a sense of belonging and teamwork that can help kids fall in love with the game. But the question remains for adult amateur golfers: could we benefit from more team formats in our clubs? Beyond the individual challenge, team golf offers a different dimension, fostering camaraderie, shared experiences, and a chance to learn from one another. It can make golf even more enjoyable and inclusive. So, as we applaud the successes of team golf on the global stage, let's also consider how we can incorporate more team formats into our local clubs. Whether you're a low handicapper or just starting, there's something uniquely rewarding about teeing up alongside teammates, working together, and celebrating each other's successes on the fairway.
