Solving the plastic waste issue requires innovative companies to take steps forward to change the culture of the recycling industry. Diverting plastic bottles from landfills to make apparel is a relatively new practice, but will become more commonplace when the recycling stream can be protected from contamination more efficiently and the data collected confirms the consistent practice of sustainable operations. 🌍📈 Global Cotton Report: Paving the Way for Circular Textile Systems 📈🌍 In 2021, Accelerating Circularity, Inc. set out to address a critical challenge in the textile industry: how to transition from a linear to a circular system. They launched two groundbreaking system trials for cotton-based textile recycling, one in the United States and the other in Europe. TexCycle was among the 43 companies that participated in this ambitious project, covering every aspect of the textile supply chain—from collection and sorting to recycling (both mechanical and chemical), fiber blending, yarn spinning, knitting, weaving, manufacturing, and retail. These trials aimed to bridge gaps in circular textile research by bringing together diverse stakeholders to develop the necessary processes, relationships, and business models. Our collective efforts were guided by ambitious goals: achieving 20% postconsumer recycled content and 40% overall recycled content. Through this collaboration, we identified target materials and made significant strides in advancing circularity. The recent deliverable from this project is the Global Cotton Report, which highlights the achievements and sets a path forward for a more sustainable textile industry.
