Half dozen decisions will determine where you end up in life! On this day, as I celebrate the 46th anniversary of my foray into the car business, I’m drawn back to a pivotal moment in 1977. It was September 10th, and I had just enjoyed an exhilarating start at Marietta Dodge, clinching two sales and pocketing a $600 commission. As the month drew to a close, the accolade of 'Salesman of the Month' was a cherry on top. But as October rolled in, a call from IBM — where I'd interviewed just before embarking on my auto-sales adventure — posed a significant crossroads. They had a sales territory, previously discussed, now available for me. I stood before one of those crucial 'half dozen decisions' that life occasionally presents, the kind that unveils our true North Star in due course. It was a choice between the well-trodden path of IBM or the passionate drive of automobile sales. Trusting my gut, I chose the road that felt right. Years deep into this voyage, I realized it was less about cars and more about discovering my authentic purpose. Now, 46 years on, every handshake, every class I conduct, and every mentee I guide further cements the knowledge that I chose wisely. Every significant milestone in our lives often stems from one of those six pivotal decisions. So, as I take a moment to commemorate this journey, I ask you: Have you encountered moments where your heart's passion overruled practicality? Here's my newsletter on Pricing strategy. 1. Customers are starting to say to businesses, "We still want to do business with you; we just don't like the way that you price." 2. "Don't like" doesn't necessarily mean a lower price; it's that we don't like the strategy that you're using. 3. Customers are now starting to demand that you change your pricing strategy. Do some surveys with your customers regarding pricing strategy and the value that you provide. Example: Hyundai did this in 2008. • During the 2008 financial crisis, things were bad. The stock market was down, and there were a lot of layoffs. • Hyundai took the time to listen to its customers, and they came back saying, "Of course, price is an issue, but the real concern for us is that we're worried about losing our jobs." • In 2009, Hyundai rolled out a pricing strategy, an assurance strategy, that said, "If you lose your job, you can return your car to us, no questions asked. You don't owe us any money if you lose your job." • Here's what's so fascinating about that strategy: They listened to their customers. • In 2009, overall auto sales dropped by 20%, but Hyundai's sales increased by 8%. They've quoted as saying that in the first 9 months of the program, less than 50 cars had been returned. That's an incredible example of a company that listened to its customers and created a pricing strategy to solve their true needs. "I want to own a BMW" "My dream company is a private bank" Tanvi (name not changed) said that to me during a session. This is a common situation a lot of people face early in their career. They have a material goal and a path they want to walk on. I asked Tanvi to go stand outside the banks she wanted to work with in the morning and count the number of BMWs that get driven in the parking lot. She had her answer. If you are chasing material goal, then you should look at the paths of people who own that material. Most people you see around who own luxury material are small business people like traders (not the stock traders), but people who are distributors of products you and I consume. Or they have small manufacturing units making things like cardboard boxes. Or builders or land owners or something else, but rarely an employee of a company. If you are chasing a career with Big 4, then know that barely 4 people drive a BMW there. That too is given by the company. Rarely does an employee buy a car like that with money from salary. Are your material goals and path aligned? #unLearn

Ford Mobile Service is an asset

If life's not going how you planned, don't worry, there's a bigger plan. Early in my career, I was fascinated by public speaking but didn't get many chances to explore it. My first time speaking was in a temple, talking to a bunch of people, including my family. I tried selling marbles and flooring goods for a business idea, but it didn't work out. I wanted to go to a better college, but my grades held me back. Then, I got a job at a big company, but they didn't pay me what I deserved - you know, the whole "naam bade aur darshan chhote" thing. Later, I joined Ford Motors, and things were good. I even survived the 2008 financial crisis. After some years, I discovered I enjoyed natural public speaking. So, I started giving talks about my experiences. Having fun with it, I decided to quit my job at Ford and start my own company. But then COVID hit, and my plans got paused. Ford even had to shut down because of it. Next, I needed funds for my business. After facing many rejections and questions, I sharpened my skills and got the funding. Currently, I'm working on my product and moving forward. ........... Life won't always go as planned, but that's what makes it an adventure. Don't dwell on the past or blame circumstances. Be ready for failures, falls, but most importantly, be ready to get back up. For a smoother ride through life, take one day at a time.

Not one single franchise dealer can boast an exceptionally seamless buying journey... in fact this dealer has got exactly the same frustrations that any other dealer is facing in todays market. That's kind of irrelevant. Why? Because they had the PROCESS and TOOLS in place to catch feedback before it was too late. Oh and just in passing... pleased to say their aged stock position has improved too.
