It's been an interesting month of stories in my Forbes world. For my last article in June, I had the spectacular fortune to interview Bill Nye (yes, that Science guy but also the CEO of the Planetary Society) and Duncan Kane, Toshiba, on their passionate and insistent support of STEM and Science, not only as a right protected in the US Constitution but also for the benefit of our planet and our people. A recent report, 'Improving the Experience of Disabled PhD students in STEM' suggested seven ways that support for #disabledPhDstudents could be improved. These included addressing gaps in support; reducing the “administrative burden” associated with securing support; and improving safeguards to prevent the relationship between disabled PhD students and their supervisors deteriorating. February 11 is International Day of Women and Girls in Science when we recognize the significant contributions of women in science and encourage the possibilities of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) for future generations. In honor of this global celebration we spoke with Aanchal Preet Kaur, a researcher with the Integrated Therapies Laboratory at Earle A. Chiles Research Institute, a division of Providence Cancer Institute of Oregon, about the journey that led her to a career in science and what advice she has for young women considering a STEM education. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a career in science? Growing up, my fascination with mathematics and the sciences was evident. Encouraged by influential teachers and inspiring women in the scientific community, I felt a calling towards research. Particularly, my immunology professor during my undergraduate studies left a profound impact on me with her unwavering passion for the subject. Fueled by my own intrigue and hands-on experience with research projects under her guidance, I embarked on a path that led me to pursue a master's in cancer immunology and biotechnology, laying the foundation for my current career trajectory. What advice or message do you want to pass on to young women thinking about pursuing a career in scientific research? To aspiring young women contemplating a career in scientific research, I urge you to pursue your passions fervently. Cultivate your curiosity and fearlessly explore projects and concepts that resonate with you. The field of science is vast and diverse, offering myriad opportunities for every individual to find their niche. Tomorrow I am talking about allyship in STEM and Life Sciences! Here are my ABCs of allyship in the workplace: A is for Amplification. As an ally, your job is to amplify the voices of those who are heard less, not because they have less to offer, but because they are systematically - by institutions and people - discriminated against, marginalized, or biased against (explicit or implicit). Use your voice and power, to make their value seen, heard, and listened to. B is for Boisterous. You won't get anything done with performance. Yes, sometimes influence is quiet, but often you need to get messy, and yes, a little loud. Put yourself on the line and out there, allyship is a verb. Create energy for change. Think about it like this, you want someone who is willing to toe the line with you, be an accomplice, someone with skin in the game. C is for Consistency. Allyship is a day in and day out job. It is not an 'on occasion' act. Even if you're just now dipping your toes in the waters of allyship (welcome!), do the small things consistently. In our National Science Foundation (NSF) funded longitudinal study of youth #pathways into #STEM, our research team is exploring youth persistence in science careers. AND we are also trying to expand how we think about pathways into STEM to center youth development and potential, and to explore life outcomes that may be more emotional and #relational. For instance, we are exploring flourishing– do the participants in our study feel like they are flourishing and thriving in their lives? In a NEW open access paper just out this past week in Frontiers in Education, we report on our findings. This article was also authored with our co-researchers (more on that next time!). We argue that a justice-oriented approach to pathways research that centers youth and new adult development and potential requires directly addressing three key assumptions: ➡ the dominant and problematic narrative of sustaining young people and emerging adults in a STEM “pipeline,” which implies a single, unidirectional pathway without regard for context, cultural differences or structural inequities;  ➡  the narrative of pursuit of STEM pathways as a dichotomous outcome (either staying in STEM or leaving); and finally, ➡ the narrative of a career as solely about “learning a discipline”  which misses outcomes that accompany one’s life’s work which may be more emotional, relational, collective, collaborative, and meaningful.
