GIS Developer Ed Conrad perfectly sums up how this team-building experience will carry over to “regular” job duties: “We went white-water rafting on the Pigeon River starting at the Tennessee-North Carolina border on a stormy, rainy day when water levels were much higher than they’d been in the past 3 months. Our guide had a palatable sense of glee seeing the high-water levels and the high speed at which the water was traveling. He instructed us on safety and that we would need to paddle in sync to safely navigate rapids and avoid rocks. As we traveled down the river, he’d tell us about the upcoming rapids. The notable rapids were given names such as Lost Guide, Double Accelerator, and Tombstone. It might have been while steering through and over Double Accelerator when our guide told us that he couldn’t see over it, and it hadn’t ever looked that way before. The uncertainty heightened our concentration, as well as our excitement, and we locked in our feet and safely paddled through without anyone go overboard. Back on dry land at our computers, we routinely face and solve complex problems. As a Business Analyst, what I’ve learnt is don’t be a glorified stenographer! Your job isn't just to scribble down what people say. Poke it, prod it, question it, and truly get it. Let them show you the ropes like you’re the new kid in every department, again and again. Different departments, different roles, different processes. That's how you really get the hang of processes, operations, interdependence, constraints, opportunities, inputs, and outcomes. This approach helps you question, validate, and understand the context you're in, so you can tackle their problems with your unique flair.

Whether our imagery is being used to reduce wildfire risk, assess the environmental impact of global forestry, contribute to timely 3D reconstructions of urban areas, or monitor carbon emissions from industrial power plants, our mission is to get better data into the hands of decision-makers fast.
