Today is #NoChildLabourDay. Worldwide 160 million children are still in child labour. This is a significant problem in the cocoa industry. According to NORC at the University of Chicago, about 1.5 million children work on cocoa plantations in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana where two-thirds of the world’s cocoa is produced. Fairtrade is committed to fighting the root causes of child labour and preventing abuse and exploitation of children through our Fairtrade Standards, which prohibits child labour as defined by the International Labour Organization. We also work to address poverty, progress towards living incomes, and strengthen farmer cooperatives to prevent and remediate child labour. For example, in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana, we are working with four small-scale producer organisations on initiatives that strengthen children’s rights and end harmful practices. By supporting Fairtrade products, cocoa exporters, importers, manufacturers, brands, and retailers in Fairtrade cocoa supply chains are supporting producer organisations to address these issues and be part of the solution. #cocoa #childlabour #ChooseFairtrade #FutureIsFair https://lnkd.in/eVyQHc3B

For generations, women in rural Ghana have been exclusively harvesting and processing shea nuts into butter, earning it the nickname: "women's gold." Ghana stands as one of Africa's top exporters, producing 130,000 tons of shea butter annually. Despite an estimated 3 million women engaged in the production process, many face abuse and unfair labor practices. Low wages are also a huge problem that these women face. Most of whom can barely afford basic necessities like food and medicine. The solution lies in empowering these women through cooperatives that redistribute the profit earned from the product so that the community and the women can flourish as well. As Dipaliya, this is one of our core principles. We funnel all of our profits back to our community in Ghana. This ensures that we can provide fair wages for the labor of our women producers and that we can improve the quality of the life in the village. 💡🌍 What works to tackle child labour? Poverty and lack of access to basic social services are some of the root causes of child labour. To address this issue, initiatives such as income-generating activities (IGAs), community service groups (CSGs), Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs), or cash transfers, help farmers to establish alternative sources of income, which helps to improve and diversify their income, increasing resilience of farming families. In 2023, Vegetable farmer Charles Koukougnon from Cote d’Ivoire, built up his farm and increased his yield after being supported to develop alternate income-generating activities to cocoa. As part of the Global efforts by the International Cocoa Initiative in understanding the broader impacts of the Child Labour Monitoring and Remediation System in Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire, Agresearch Lead has been selected as the Ghanaian partner to conduct a quantitative Endline survey of child labour prevalence in Ghana by International Cocoa Initiative! The assignment seeks to conduct a quantitative endline survey of child labour prevalence in Ghana targeting 1700 households, 3500 children in cocoa growing areas in 28 cocoa communities. This assignment would be used as part of a broader impact study to understand the impact of an intervention called a Child Labour Monitoring and Remediation System. The team shall engage head of households or spouses, children aged 5-17 within sampled households and community leaders in selected Cocoa areas in Ghana. #data #InternationalCocoaIntitiative #Childlabour #childprotection

Weekend listening. 27 minutes of your time. In Ghana, women constitute half of the agricultural household population. However, less than a quarter of them can acquire and own land across all forms of land acquisition and ownership tenure arrangements. As a result, only four out of every ten women in the agricultural sector can control major decision-making and exercise management in their agricultural activities. Despite over two decades of land reform programmes, policies, and legislations, patriarchal social norms and customs that govern customary lands, particularly in the northern region, discriminate against women's access to secured land This impacts the ability of women to be economically independent and provide critical needs for their dependants. Against this background, Imani Centre for Policy and Education through its Atlas-supported ‘Joining Up to Minimise Poverty’ project has leveraged audio-visual tools to advocate for access to secured lands for women in the northern region of Ghana. Period poverty is the lack of access to sanitary products, normally, due to financial constraints. This causes many women to resort to using unhygienic means which leads to infections. This happens mostly in rural communities, the cost of disposable Pads is on the increase and getting the money to buy this every month becomes a very big challenge to these girls. Some do not go to school when menstruating due to the fear of being stained. Support a girl child today by buying Volta Pads, which could last two years(24 Months) for them. Today, Kenya marks 61 years of independence, celebrated under the theme "Promoting Agriculture and Food Security." While we honor our nation's progress, it is crucial to address the widening inequality gap that affects our socially and economically marginalized communities, both in rural areas and urban slums like Mukuru. The ongoing demolition of houses on riparian land in places like Mukuru has displaced countless families, leaving them with no clear path to resettlement. These individuals, already struggling to make ends meet, now face even greater uncertainty. Our girls and women continue to face #PeriodPoverty and stigma, unable to afford essential sanitary products. Our elderly struggle to live with dignity, and our children are deprived of the education that is supposed to be the key to their success. With schools in Mukuru being demolished and many families unable to provide even two meals a day, the right to education—and therefore freedom—is being denied to thousands of children. As we celebrate our independence, let us not forget these pressing issues. We must address the needs of our most vulnerable communities to ensure that every Kenyan can truly benefit from the promise of our independence.
