Thanks to Stuff for the great write-up recently! We're inviting businesses in Pōneke to get on board our solution to reduce food waste to landfill and its planet-heating emissions, and support the growth of local food systems, toward a thriving, low-carbon future for our city.
Local food growing - in māra kai, schools, community gardens, urban farms, backyards, berms and more - generates a wide range of local benefits: from mental health and wellbeing, to boosting local food growing skills and knowledge, supporting community cohesion, biodiversity, reducing carbon emissions from our food supply chain, and plenty more.
There are already dozens of community gardens and urban farms in Pōneke. If this became hundreds, imagine how the positive impacts would add up!
But we need a local supply of compost to set up and fuel them. This is why we are strong advocates for localised composting - to ensure some of our city's food scraps are going into producing these local benefits, rather than all being trucked away to large facilities.
