Advancing the future of polyolefin recycling - Inside RE Plano's partnership with STEINERT for one of the most advanced plastics sorting facilities 👇 RE PLANO GmbH, a subsidiary of REMONDIS Gruppe, has teamed up with STEINERT to open a state-of-the-art plastics sorting facility in Bochum, Germany that is equipped with the latest AI sorting technology. With a capacity to process over 30,000 tons annually, the facility features the latest AI-based sorting innovations to separate even the most difficult-to-sort plastics, such as white and natural-coloured plastics, as well as single and multi-layer packaging to over 97% purity. ♻️💛 By combining colour and near-infrared sensors, STEINERT aims to develop AI-based sorting to further advance the recycling of difficult plastic types. TRIPLAST – Europe’s most modern sorting plant attracts international attention. 🎯 Since the beginning of July 2024 TRIPLAST is now officially in operation. The three owners of the new sorting plant for lightweight packaging in Upper Austria – ARA - Altstoff Recycling Austria AG, Bernegger GmbH and Der Grüne Punkt – Duales System Deutschland GmbH– Invited to the official opening of the new sorting plant for lightweight packaging in #Ennshafen. Exclusive Tour International interest is rapidly growing and we wanted to give PROsPA members, together with the PRO Europe members at the annual PRO Europe shareholders' meeting, the opportunity to visit the facility even before the official opening, to get a first impression on the new sorting plant and its forward thinking set-up. Erwin Janda, Managing Director of ARAplus GmbH, and martin prieler, CEO of ARA AG, were on site and gave the members detailed information about the new sorting plant: ❗ Austria has to double the recycling quote of plastic packaging by the end of 2025. The new sorting plant will make a significant contribution as it processes materials for subsequent recycling, ensuring that valuable raw materials are not getting lost. The circular economy project in Ennshafen, Upper Austria, has an annual sorting capacity of 100,000 tons of plastic and metal packaging, which means that 50% of all Austrian lightweight packaging can be sorted there. Furthermore, it creates more than 60 new green jobs. With 2.5 km of conveyor belt, 160 km of cable, 2,250 tons of reinforced steel, 38 near-infrared devices and three sieve drums state-of-the-art technology was applied in the sorting plant. Packaging is processed in such a way that it can then be turned into recyclate and used to manufacture new packaging or other products. TriPlast handles roughly 20 tons per hour and is more than three times the size of existing plants in Austria. Of course, proper safety was ensured during the tour, and everyone was equipped with mandatory safety vests and helmets. Mechanical recycling is a key element of a circular economy. However, it is not always possible to replace high-performance film structures with single-material solutions that can be mechanically recycled without making compromises in terms of material efficiency and carbon footprints.   To keep high-performance films recyclable as well, additional recycling technologies are necessary. 🌟 Innovation to boost the recycling of #packaging #plastics! 🌟 At ITENE we are leading the development of new delamination processes for post-consumer flexible packaging with multilayer structure in the framework of the European project MERLIN (#Horizon2020), coordinated by our research center. As the project coordinator, our expert César Aliaga, explained in a webinar on March 27, at ITENE, we are developing disruptive processes for the sorting, delamination and recycling of multilayer rigid and flexible plastic packaging with a circular economy model. The need for efficient plastic recycling in the automotive industry has never been greater. Responding to this challenge, we have teamed up with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, NIO, Volkswagen Group and TÜV Rheinland Group. Together, we are developing a joint program including closed-loop solutions for high-value plastics from end-of-life vehicles. Within the pilot program, a specialized team will investigate techniques for recycling and processing discarded polycarbonate components, like end-of-life car headlights, into post-consumer recycled (PCR) polycarbonates. Happy #PlasticRecyclingWeek! After a successful debut in 2023, PLASTICS (Plastics Industry Association) is organizing another thematic week around plastics recycling. As a representative of the technology side, we are more than happy to participate and share some of our thoughts, solutions and strategic approaches around recycling in the upcoming days. Today we start off by giving you a sneak peek of our recently opened Recycling Innovation Center in the South of Germany. The facility hosts state-of-the-art process technology for material handling, feeding, extrusion, compounding as well as pelletizing and is the perfect place to run trials or develop new solutions for reclaiming plastics materials.
