Best Buy’s move into prescription-based devices is an interesting development in their healthcare strategy. Previous deals focused on developing a tech-enabled home care offering, such as their acquisition of Current Health, followed by partnerships with Atrium Health and Geisinger Health. This expansion brings Best Buy closer to traditional retail pharmacy players like CVS and Walgreens, which offer prescription-based devices such as CGMs and CPAP supplies. Moreover, Best Buy is building a platform to streamline the process of obtaining the CGM prescription, integrating virtual care provider Wheel and digital pharmacy services provider HealthDyne. Once Best Buy’s new platform is fully launched, it will be interesting to see if they eventually leverage it to offer other types of prescription medical devices. For now, though, limited ability to bill insurance may be a limiting factor, and leadership at Best Buy Health has stated that they do not intend to offer provider services like CVS and Walgreens, but will instead continue forming partnerships with health systems.
