One of the first people to make me feel seen and believed after my traumatic childbirth experience was a nurse. Twelve years ago, I almost died giving birth in America in one of the best in Washington, DC. After 33 hours of labor, (3 of which were spent pushing), a 104 degree fever, doctors declared I needed an emergency C-section. But when I got to the operating room, the doctor there didn't believe that I was in pain. He wanted me to "prove it" to him by demanding I get from the stretcher to the operating table by myself-- unassisted. Obviously I couldn’t, the doctor had no choice but to believe me. That day, both my baby and I almost didn’t survive. I am grateful to be here today but what I am really grateful for was one nurse in particular. In the days and months after a traumatic birth and becoming a new mom, everything was a blur but I was determined to try to find out what the hell happened during my delivery. There was one nurse I spoke with who told me my doctor was “notorious” and was verbally abusive to female patients in the delivery room. She confirmed all my worst fears but she also gave me my sanity and the assurance that I had not imagined anything. It was not “in my head.” This week as we celebrate #nurses, let’s remember how nurses are not just the backbone of the healthcare industry. They are often the first person patients interact with, the ones asking questions and checking your vital signs. 👩⚕️ Women comprise almost 70% of health-care workers globally and nearly 90% of the nursing and midwifery workforce. 👩⚕️ Nursing has been portrayed as a feminine occupation since Florence Nightingale's nursing training in the mid-nineteenth century . 👩⚕️ Male nurses are more likely to work at inpatient hospitals and more likely to negotiate their salaries. 👩⚕️ According to the National Library of Medicine (NLM), 35% of nurses reported burnout. (Source: Incredible Health). Despite doing the bulk of the world’s caretaking, women’s health still remains an afterthought. This #NationalNursesWeek, take a step to change that. #WomensHealth is not an issue that just effects women but ALL of us! #womenshealth #healthcare #thepaingappodcast #nurses

Support systems are crucial for nurses and their well-being this could include mentorship programs for skill development and confidence building. Peer support groups provide spaces for sharing experiences and emotional support, reducing feelings of isolation. Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) offer confidential counseling services to cope with work and life stress, while continuing education opportunities ensure nurses stay updated and advance their careers. Flexible work arrangements and wellness initiatives promote work-life balance and overall health. Celebrating nurses achievement and conflict resolution mechanisms further contribute to a supportive work environment, thereby empowering nurses to thrive. There are many more ways nurses can be supported. Nurses need more support! Good share Jose Arnold Tariga, PhD, MSN, RN, CNE, NPD-BC, CPHQ

This week, as we honor our incredible nurses who are at the forefront of healthcare, let's also focus on how we can better support them in their critical roles. The healthcare landscape has evolved dramatically over the years, yet the systems that support our nursing professionals often have not kept pace. Many nurses express a desire to step away from the bedside or even leave the profession altogether due to outdated practices and overwhelming work environments. It's a clear signal that change is overdue! As we appreciate the difference nurses make every day, we must also commit to innovating and updating the systems that support them. Let's use this Nurses Week to advocate for and implement new approaches that ensure our nurses have the resources, environment, and support they need to thrive. Together, we can ensure that our nurses continue to make a difference in the lives of so many. HAPPY NURSES WEEK! #NursesWeek #HealthcareInnovation #SupportNurses

After 30 years in nursing, I’m used to defending the profession, clarifying our role, explaining what nurses really do, etc. At times it has been frustrating and tiresome. Let's use the spotlight placed on nurses during the pandemic as a springboard to get more visible and vocal in the community, in the media, in government, and in business. Let's continue to work collectively to underscore the broad scope of nursing, the true nature of what we do, the value we bring to healthcare, and how we are changing the world in small and large ways every day—each in our own way. #NursePower #NursesOnLinkedIn #nurse

This week, May 6-12, is National Nurses Week. Celebrate by recognizing the challenges faced by nurses and the importance of supporting their wellbeing. According to a study by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, around 100,000 registered nurses left the workforce in the past two years, with another 700,000 intending to leave by 2027. The heart of the issue is chronic understaffing, coupled with feelings of being undervalued and overworked. Healthcare organizations must listen and act. This article: We Need to Talk about How Health Care Is “Broken” from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, provides a quick overview of the issues facing healthcare today. No matter what demographic you are in - access to affordable, competent, caring health care is something everyone can get behind. https://lnkd.in/gJZPNA98
In my entire 44 years in nursing, I never thought I would support nurses striking. It is so contrary to the commitment to care that nurses ascribe to. But in looking at what is happening within the health care industry, it seems that it is exactly that commitment that makes striking necessary to fix a broken system. Thank you Rebecca Love RN, MSN, FIEL and Jaime Weiland for sharing this perspective. #Nurses #NursesonLinkedIn #brokenhealthcare

Since the days of Florence Nightingale, nurses have had a perpetual role in supporting the health of communities. For decades, nurses have advocated for their discipline and have made huge strides in expanding their scope of practice. Nursing is a multifaceted career that transcends from providing physical care, counselling, and supporting mental health, to navigating the vexing and complex health and social systems. Primary care nurses are irrefutably some of the most talented having a vast understanding of the health of those who have yet to enter this world…and those who are leaving it. They bring a pragmatic approach to care and are the right hand of many physicians and a staple in this industry. Whether you are an RPN, RN or NP – you inspire those you work alongside. In primary care, healthcare providers are laden with immense responsibility without the accompaniment of funding or respect from decision-makers. Regardless of the future of healthcare in Ontario and Canada, we know that nurses have an inviolable role.
