🚀 Thrilled to share my recent victory at The Raccoons' 48-hour hackathon! 🌿 Last week, I embarked on an incredible journey alongside some brilliant minds to tackle the vital issue of sustainability and data. Our mission? Crafting an innovative solution, and that's precisely what we did. Introducing 'ForestMon' – a revolutionary deforestation monitoring system. 🛰️ Leveraging satellite data, 'ForestMon' employs the cutting-edge 'Segment Anything Model' (SAM) to meticulously segment forests from satellite imagery, creating precise masks. With this technology, we accurately calculate forest area, and here's the game-changer: when that area dips below a critical threshold, we automatically alert the forest owner. 🌍 This remarkable challenge was presented by the Latvian Investment and Development Agency, in collaboration with Norway Grants and the Technology Business Center. Their support and this experience have been truly remarkable. 🏆 I'm thrilled to announce that our hard work paid off – we emerged victorious in the competition. 🏏 Wickets Down, Spirits High! That's a wrap on another incredible foundation week at CREDUCE! We saved the best for last, with an epic box cricket tournament that had our team members cheering, swinging, and (of course) celebrating each other's (slightly awkward ) cricketing skills. The atmosphere was electric, filled with friendly competition, playful banter, and laughter. We may not be professional athletes, but our passion for the game (and each other) was undeniable. 🌿 This week has been a whirlwind of fun, creativity, and community spirit. We've donned dazzling ethnic attire, feasted on delicious potlucks, and even unleashed our inner artists in a "Best Out of Waste" competition. But most importantly, we've reconnected with our shared purpose of tackling climate change. We're a team united by a common goal, and these celebrations have only strengthened our resolve to positively impact the planet. This shows the power of 'mission thinking' as a crucial tool to fix society faster. When a mission becomes concrete enough, it makes it much easier for everyone involved to focus activities: "will this help achieve our mission, how does it contribute"? It's also an invitation to the wider world: who feels attracted to this mission and would like to contribute? Finally, a concrete mission allows a path to be tracked and results to be constantly monitored: are the strategies we designed the right ones?

Still mulling over yet another compelling set of lectures from the Environmental Innovation module of my Sustainability apprenticeship with Cranfield University … Kicking off with Francis Hassard and the importance of sanitation and all the working parts required to keep us hydrated and safe! As someone working for a business heavily involved in the utilities sector you can’t help but feel proud of the service provided by our teams on the ground to help make this happen for citizens. It’s a big deal! 🚰 Next up a reality check with Jim Harris and the importance of nature and complex ecosystems and the services they provide. Not sure what I mean? 🐸 This clip gives some good insight – https://lnkd.in/evREqGBX Finishing off with Orsolya Ihasz, PhD and Eco-Innovation - and the need for trial and error and continuous improvement – basically go big or go home! 💡 A lesson I’m learning from so many of my colleagues at Barhale Ltd, our innovative suppliers and fellow students as they push towards being more sustainable – some for the business and others for the planet – either way better for the environment. Not an easy task when you need time to give things a go; client demands are upon you; and there are somewhat limited funds to allow for change 📆 🚦 📉 I guess the ultimate message is that there is so much to do - for us all. But it’s without doubt that we must be less wasteful and more appreciative of nature’s gifts. At Barhale Ltd we’re becoming more mindful of the role we can play in supporting biodiversity and eco-system services through nature-based solutions, investment in nature positive initiatives, raising staff awareness through dedicated training and campaigns ⏳ With this in mind, this month Barhale Ltd are promoting PlantLife’s No Mow May movement with staff – not having to get the mower out for a month can't be such a bad thing – allowing wildflowers to bloom, providing essential habitat for pollinators like bees, butterflies and other insects and in turn helping to restore balance to our local ecosystems. Data shows that since the 1930s the UK has lost 97% of British wildflower meadows so to mark the occasion Barhale Ltd will be offering seeds to employees to help get gardens buzzing again 🐝 🦋 To find out more or to register click here https://lnkd.in/e3CeiwE2.
