And what better way to create a #SustainableEnergy future than to learn with, and from, the next generation of energy experts.   This summer, we’ve been lucky enough to have two passionate energy #interns join us at our Melbourne office.   Maryam Abbasi and Oyundari Davaanyam are both undertaking a Master of Energy Systems at the University of Melbourne. Until the end of February, Maryam and Oyundari will work with our energy team on some of the issues that are central to the Australian energy transition, which in the National Electricity Market include:  🔸 The technologies, locational spread and economics of firming services.   🔸 The changing requirements of essential system services and how these will be provided.  🔸 The long-term role and economics of hydrogen.  The findings of such analysis are being used to support modelling of the Australian energy markets undertaken by Marsden Jacob. 🌟AEE Online Internship - Day 7: Fundamentals of PV💡 In the seventh master course by the Association of Energy Engineers - Lebanon Chapter, Eng. Mira Daher , MEng. Explained the fundamentals of photovoltaic (PV) technology, emphasizing its growth in Lebanon. She detailed the country's transition from zero solar power in 2010 to 1,300 megawatts by 2023, driven by favorable conditions and initiatives from the Lebanese Center for Energy Conservation (LCEC). Eng. Daher covered the principles of solar heating technologies and their applications in providing hot water, heating, and cooling. She also addressed the advantages of solar energy, such as its clean nature and high energy potential, while noting challenges like variability and the need for extensive collection areas. The presentation included an explanation of the p-n junction and the photovoltaic effect, illustrating how sunlight is converted into electricity within PV cells. Eng. Daher described the components of PV panels, including the frame, glass, and encapsulation, and introduced the concept of Fill Factor to assess panel efficiency, with typical values around 80% for silicon cells. #aee #energy #solar_panels #PV

Last week marked the end of my Blue Book traineeship at the European Commission! For the past five months I was able to contribute to various high-profile files at DG ENER's unit C.4 "Infrastructure and Regional Cooperation". Grateful for being able to work with my colleagues on the development of infrastructure policy on the future electricity and hydrogen grids. At C.4 I was supporting: 💡 the preparation and adoption of the first Union list of projects of common interest (PCIs) and projects of mutual interest (PMIs) under the revised TEN-E Regulation 2022/869;  💡 the preparation of the first offshore network development plans (ONDPs) under the revised TEN-E Regulation 2022/869;  💡 qualitative and quantitative assessments of candidate projects in the fields of electricity transmission and offshore projects as well as hydrogen and electrolyser projects;  💡 coordination of infrastructure policies between national grid operators, regulatory authorities and Member States as well as with the ENTSOS and ACER;  💡 the preparation of 4th PCI Energy Days, a high-level policy conference and exhibition dedicated to the practical implementation of Projects of Common Interest. #BlueBook #traineeship #EUcareers #EU #DGEner #energy

Hoi, I am happy to announce the start of my graduation project at Ventolines, right after an impactful 2-month Internship with Gijs van der Veen as my supervisor. This time, I'm developing a Cable Ampacity Calculation Dashboard, a vital tool for analyzing expansion in renewable energy systems with Benjamin Stobbe as my thesis supervisor. Mohamad Ghaffarian Niasar will be my university supervisor. His expertise in high-voltage cables will be very useful in guiding this project towards success. For my graduation project, I will program a dynamic cable ampacity calculation tool to manage increased loads from renewable sources like solar, wind, and batteries. Conventionally, cable capacity is calculated based on steady-state conditions (handy for steady producers like power plants but not so for renewables), leading to the underutilization of their full capacity. The tool will optimize this by precisely determining the additional renewable energy load an existing cable can sustain before hitting its thermal threshold. The tool could also explore options for more efficient cables, potentially reducing precious material usage. Additionally, the dashboard will compare theoretical calculations with real monitored cable data to validate feasibility and learn from real-world examples.
