India's unfolding #agritech story. Globally, the focus is on upstream investments in #agriculture whereas in India the infatuation of midstream investments continue. A huge shift in approach is needed for creating long lasting and sustainable solutions. Upstream startups in agri are working to create new solutions for the industry that can help improve farm efficiencies and ultimately lead to improved output quality and quantity. This is a more sustainable but time consuming approach. The midstream startups are working mostly on B2B supply chain efficiencies which are dominated by the unorganized sector where entry barrier is very strong when it comes to match their costs amongst other variables that they have already mastered over generations. Chennai-headquartered Anicut Capital, an alternative investment firm, has raised ₹50 crore from the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) for its Grand Anicut Fund. Anicut Equity Fund launched its Grand Anicut Fund 3 in June 2022 with a total targeted corpus of ₹500 crore, with an additional ₹ 250 crore green shoe option. It has so far closed two-thirds of the fund and also received a commitment of Rs 75 crore from the Self-Reliant India Fund (SRI). The latest investment comes through the Fund of Funds for Startups, launched under the Startup India Initiative by the Government of India. The strategic move is aimed at boosting the early growth-stage companies that are a part of its portfolio. “We are excited to welcome SIDBI as an investor through the FFS initiative. Ahmedabad-based startup Qarmatek Services Private Limited has raised $1 million (Rs 8.3 crore) in a pre-Series A funding round, co-led by industry leaders Umang Nahata, Rakesh Raman, and Vishal Makwana. Nahata and Raman are associated with Orange Orbit, while Makwana hails from Texspin. This funding round elevates QarmaTek’s total funding to $4.11 million. The startup previously raised $3 million in 2021 from Gujarat Venture Finance, Caspian Debt, and other investors. With the new capital, QarmaTek aims to diversify its operations within the renewed electronics market and scale its geographical presence. Founded in 2011 by Krunal Shah and Arun Hattangadi, QarmaTek specializes in the B2B sector, offering comprehensive services for electronic products. These include multi-brand repair, refurbishment, call centre services, network and logistics support, and tailored predictive solutions for devices like smartphones, laptops, and home appliances. QarmaTek is committed to sustainability by extending the lifecycle of electronic products through renewal and refurbishment, thus promoting a circular economy. India generates approximately 1.71 million metric tons of e-waste annually, contributing to a global e-waste crisis of 59.40 million metric tons. According to a study by KPMG and ASSOCHAM, computer equipment constitutes nearly 70% of India's e-waste, followed by telecom devices (12%), electrical equipment (8%), and medical equipment (7%). QarmaTek's mission aligns closely with reducing e-waste and promoting sustainability. "Our aim is to promote sustainability by extending the lifecycle of electronic products," the company states, emphasizing its dedication to minimizing e-waste and supporting environmental conservation.
