An interesting media manifesto from the News Media Association, ahead of the UK #GeneralElection. It’s a decent start but needs a lot more work. Its current demands include: 1) Compensation for publishers agreeing to feed large language models (LLM) such as ChatGPT 2) Special measures to protect local media (especially against the bulldozer of BBC coverage) 3) And legislation to guarantee press freedom Yet, there's nothing about training. For me, that’s a big miss. We need to nurture the next generation of reporters. I also worry that there’s no mention of diversity or inclusion. One of the biggest failings of journalism today is that everyone sounds (and looks) the same. We need fresh, new voices. But what else is missing? #JournalismMatters https://lnkd.in/eP2dTGxr

🤬 Are social media platforms overrun with illegal hate speech and vitriol? That’s the assumption of EU policymakers who have passed sweeping legislation like the Digital Services Act (DSA), which strong-arms platforms into removing illegal hate speech and disinformation. 🔍 A new report from The Future of Free Speech analyzes content removal on social media platforms in France, Germany, and Sweden to see if these regulatory justifications reflect reality. It finds: 📊 Between 87.5% and 99.7% of deleted comments across Facebook and YouTube were legally permissible. 🇩🇪 Germany had the highest proportion of legally permissible deleted comments, with 99.7% on Facebook and 98.9% on YouTube, suggesting that its Network Enforcement Act (NetzDG) could be influencing content moderation decisions. 🗣️ Among the deleted comments, more than 56% were classified as “general expressions of opinion.” In other words, these were statements that did not contain linguistic attacks, hate speech, or illegal content. ❌ While our report couldn’t feasibly determine *who* was deleting the comments (i.e., platforms, pages, or users), our findings suggest that external pressure from policies, media, and civil society is leading to an over-removal of content. 🤔 So if the assumptions about “torrents” of illegal hate speech online aren’t true, where does that leave us? As we evaluate new digital regulations in the EU, it is vital to critically assess whether they will have a detrimental effect on free expression online. ⚖️ Although the DSA didn’t come into full effect until after our analysis, our findings suggest that it will have the unintended consequence of stifling legitimate online discourse. 🧑✈️ If platforms face steep financial penalties for not moderating illegal content, they will undoubtedly seek to minimize risk and police more speech than necessary to comply. 👉 Read the full report for an in-depth analysis: https://lnkd.in/ensArTyz #FreeSpeech #DigitalRights #TechPolicy #SocialMedia #FreeExpression

“Commendable for Mike Markovitz and his team to set this up . My concern is that there appears to be less and less focus on the quality and independence of journalism and questions of "ownership," "truthful/quality content" have given sway to "monetization and control". From "journalism as a public good" to "embeddment" to "sustainable business modeling" straight through to "placement...advertorials and targetted messaging" where ...“Both platforms and publishers should adopt the highest possible degree of transparency so that all parties can judge the fairness of any deal and so that third parties can assess and evaluate the impact of the mechanism as a whole. For example, mechanisms may require platforms and publishers to share data about the size and behaviour of their audiences and advertising placements,” (section seven of the principles). reads. Maybe I read wrong and some algorithm in the deal would recommend "cancellation" and "demonetizing" which is censorship by any other word.

I spoke on the impact of AI technology on electoral processes and democratic participation in Nigeria in this Q&A interview with Eric Davis. I believe conversations can steer interventions as we navigate the impact of #generativeai on voting choices and public opinion. #genai #elections2024 #democracy #nigeria
In February 2023, the Nigerian presidential election was marred by disinformation, including AI-generated deep fakes. In our latest #NatSpecs blog, IST Senior Vice President for Special Projects Eric Davis sat down with Nigerian journalist and John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships at Stanford fellow Hannah Ajakaiye, who spearheaded local efforts to fight the proliferation of misinformation with FactsMatterNG, a fact-checking initiative she founded to restore information integrity on digital platforms. “One would expect that people should be able to decipher [deep fakes], but because people have their biases and preconceived opinions, they won't even allow for critical thinking when engaging with a manipulated content of this nature,” Ajakaiye said. https://lnkd.in/etgmsdZZ

Thanks Senator Elizabeth Warren. All social media is doing the same and the latest is shadow banning. I sent the following to social media executives but they are all complicit in hiding the truth and thus supporting genocide. Subject: Request to Uphold Freedom of Expression on Social Media Platforms Dear Social Media Executive, I am writing to express my concern regarding the perceived limitations on freedom of expression on your platform. While I understand the need to maintain a safe and inclusive environment, I believe it is crucial to ensure that diverse perspectives are not stifled in the process. The recent suspension of accounts, deleting posts, shadow banning etc. that diverge from a particular narrative has raised apprehensions about the platform's commitment to fostering open dialogue. It is essential to recognize the importance of allowing users to express a wide range of opinions, fostering healthy debates, and promoting a truly inclusive online community. I urge you to reconsider the current approach to account suspensions and content moderation. Striking a balance between maintaining a respectful online environment and preserving freedom of expression is pivotal for the continued success of your platform. By adopting transparent policies and promoting diverse viewpoints, you can contribute to a more vibrant and dynamic online discourse. Thank you for your time and consideration. I believe that by working together, we can create an online space that respects the principles of freedom of expression while upholding community standards

🚨 NEW REPORT 🚨 🗨 Are social media platforms overrun with "torrents" of hate speech? Or are external policy and cultural pressures stifling free expression online through aggressive content moderation? 🚫 In a new report, we found that legal online speech made up most of the removed content from posts on Facebook and YouTube in France, Germany, and Sweden. 📊 Of the deleted comments examined across platforms and countries, between 87.5% and 99.7%, depending on the sample, were legally permissible. ❌ 🗣 ❌ In other words, a substantial majority of the deleted comments investigated are legal, suggesting that – contrary to prevalent narratives – over-removal of legal content may be a bigger problem than under-removal of illegal content. A digital dilemma: To Share or Not to Dare Why oftentimes social media turn into a courtroom? Because some understood “Trial and error” literally 👀🤷🏽♂️ We often come across content on #socialmedia which disclose others’ private and family matters, spread #hatespeech, or even incite to violence, all under the pretext “my wall, my rules”. Careful with that. Cause that’s not exactly true. The line between personal/private and public in the #online space is thin. There have been even criminal convictions and imprisonment sentences for content on “private” walls. When you post online, your platform goes beyond personal space, and so do responsibilities extend. And it’s not just the post, - the photo, video, or text, - same applies to the likes 👍 as well(!): the European Court of Human Rights (#ECtHR) also considered that using the "Like" button on social networks to express interest towards or approve the contents published by third persons constituted a current and popular form of the exercise of #freedomofexpression online. Freedom of expression is protected, but it also may be limited to ensure a balance between individual #rights. The ECtHR has found for instance that respect for privacy and family life outweighs the right to freedom of expression if statements published on social media do not contribute to a debate of general social interest. Speaking of general interest, #journalists enjoy special protection, in that that “States are required to establish an effective mechanism for the protection of authors and journalists in order to create a favourable environment for participation in public debate of all those concerned, enabling them to express their opinions and ideas without fear, even if they run counter to those defended by the official authorities or by a significant part of public opinion, or even if they are irritating or shocking.” But that’s one side of the coin. The other one is that it has to be counterbalanced with the other rights, most notably the right to respect for private life, including the right to protection of reputation as an element of #privatelife, which is by far the most frequently conflict raised before the ECtHR. The Court has held that the risk of harm posed by content and communications on the Internet to the exercise and enjoyment of #humanrights and freedoms, particularly the right to respect for private life, is higher than that posed by the [traditional] press. So it’s about finding the right balance between freedom of expression and safeguarding personal privacy. An opinion maker, - and that in today’s world could be any of us, - should be mindful of this delicate balance. #digitalworldproblems #digital #digitalethics #DigitAllOrNothing™
