A drift backward to silos in the Organization Yesterday, I had an insightful conversation with a customer that illuminated a common challenge in the tech industry: the drift towards siloed platform teams and development teams. This scenario echoed the once prevalent Dev vs. Ops paradigm, a hurdle many of us thought we had overcome with the advent of DevOps. The customer’s company had recently embarked on an initiative to establish a platform engineering function. The goal was ambitious and clear: to create a robust, scalable, and developer-friendly platform that would accelerate innovation and improve operational efficiency. However, despite their best intentions, they found themselves in a familiar predicament—the emergence of silos between the platform engineering team and the development teams. 🔍 Diagnosis: The Root of the Silos As we went deeper into the conversation, a critical insight emerged. The main reason of the issue was neither the lack of effort or skills but a significant constraint that many organizations overlook: the lack of freedom within the platform itself. The platform, designed to be the booster of development and operations, had inadvertently become a barrier. Stringent controls and limited access meant that developers felt detached from the platform. Instead of a tool that empowered them, it was a hurdle they had to overcome. This detachment fostered the development of silos, as each team retreated into their domains, focusing on their immediate objectives rather than the broader goal of seamless collaboration.
