Today, on the 5th of July 2024, My Hedhammar (from KTH Royal Institute of Technology) will present her poster “FN-silk as ECM-mimic for the construction of physiologically relevant models of barrier tissue” at the EUROoCS2024 Annual Meeting in Milan, Italy! 🇮🇹 Currently, for drug development, there is a need for physiologically relevant models of barrier tissue where cells are arranged with in vivo-like morphology, cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions, and communication without synthetic membranes. My’s poster highlights the ability of FN-silk, a recombinant functionalized silk protein, in mimicking the extracellular matrix and supporting cells to grow in 3D models. Depending on the formulation, FN-silk allows construction of physiological tissue models (e.g. skin, lung, and intestine) as it is able to support stromal, epithelial and endothelial cells. Hence, replicating the natural tissue of the human body. Will you be attending the EUROoCS2024 Annual Meeting? Make sure to stop by at My’s poster! #EUROoCS2024 #GUTVIBRATIONS

How to improve light sources for biomedical and healthcare applications : the challenge that the HILIGHT project has to overcome ! HILIGHT means ‘Highly Integrated Versatile Laser Source enabling two-photon excitation in digital diagnostics and biomedical research’. This project started at the end of 2023, proposes a miniaturised and versatile optical pulse burst source together with innovative sensing technology. This will permit to overcome limitations in SoA instrumentation that often confine the use of two-photon microscopy and time-resolved detection to the specialist laboratory. Two key applications are particularly targeted : instantaneous digital histopathology and cancer research and diagnostics. Other partners : Centre Suisse d’Electronique et de Microtechnique (CSEM), VivaScope GmbH - US Market, Fondazione Bruno Kessler - FBK, Brunel University London Website : hilighthorizon.eu #twophotonexcitation #fluorescencelifetimeimagingmicroscopy

Michael Keidar, the A. James Clark Professor in Engineering, is #advancing efforts to reduce the toxicity of #cancertreatment. His pioneering work with #coldatmosphericplasma (CAP) devices has shown promise in selectively targeting #cancercells while sparing healthy ones. With the support of a $100,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, Keidar is launching a #groundbreaking project. Titled "In situ OH and H202 imaging measurements in #helium-air cold atmospheric plasma for #machinelearning optimization as an essential part of adaptive plasma for #biomedicalapplications," it aims to optimize CAP for specific cancer cell types using machine learning. Keidar and Dr. Li Lin will measure the spatial and temporal evolution of critical reactive species, OH and H202, in a plasma jet at the Plasma Research Facility of Sandia National Laboratories. This data will be crucial for developing machine learning algorithms to precisely control key species in biomedical treatments. The ultimate goal is personalized CAP treatments for a variety of diseases, with a strong focus on cancer. #cancerresearch #MedicalAdvancements #machinelearning #plasmatherapy

✨ Good evening from Day 1 of #ICOB2024 in Jena - the city indispensable for microscopy, as Nobel Laureate in Chemistry Stefan Hell pointed out 🔬 He opened our International Congress on #Biophotonics today with a captivating lecture and the latest insights into super-resolution microscopy in a packed Volkshaus Jena. ✨ With more than 300 experts from research, technology, medicine and industry from 26 countries, Jena will become a hub for the global biophotonics community over the next few days. 🌍 Their aim is to network, exchange ideas on the most innovative light-based technologies for medicine and advance the processes for their practical application. 💡 And what better place to do this than the "City of Light" in Optical Valley. “Jena’s connection to #optics and #photonics is deeply rooted in the city's history, shaped by the contributions of great minds such as Carl Zeiss, Ernst Abbe, and the innovative glass maker Otto Schott”, as our director Juergen Popp pointed out in his welcome address. Stefan Hell emphasised the crucial role of biophotonics in the early detection of diseases: "Photonics, i.e. light, can be used very well to understand life, and certain photonic technologies have the potential to detect chemical changes in cells and tissues at a very early stage. Diagnostics and early detection can be crucial in combating diseases at an early stage". Stay tuned for more impressions from #ICOB2024. 🌟 Exciting News! 🌟 I am beyond thrilled to share that I'll be jetting off to South Africa in July for International Conference on Tomography of Materials and Structures #ICTMS2024! 🛫 This journey isn't just about presenting research—it's about diving headfirst into a world of discovery and innovation. Our presentation, "Enhancing Preclinical Micro-CT: The Role of Contouring in Analyzing Bone Substitute Remodeling," promises to unveil the potential of contouring techniques in understanding bone substitute dynamics. By utilizing non-destructive techniques in preclinical trials such as micro-CT, we're unlocking insights into how new bone substitutes (BoneReg) contribute to the formation of a robust bone network in critical-size defects. As I prepare to showcase our findings on the huge benefits of microCT in biomedical research, I can't help but reflect on the challenges. Navigating through over 40 samples and extracting more than 115 edges of bone tunnels can be daunting. But no fear! You need proper methodology, and you need to be armed with the tools necessary to conquer the complex analyses (Dragonfly). Excited doesn't even begin to describe how I feel about this journey. ✈️🔬 #ICTMS2024 #MicroCT #BiomedicalResearch #Innovation
