On 17-18th of October Hospitality representatives from across Europe gathered to the 89th General Assambly of HOTREC - Hotels, Restaurants & Cafés in Europe in Warsaw, this time to discuss pressing industry concerns and upcoming EU rules that will shape the future of the sector. The AIB H1 2024 Hospitality & Tourism Spend Report shows the hospitality sector had an increase of 3.3% in spending compared to the same period last year.   The pub trade had an encouraging six months of trade with spend up 11.4%, however restaurant spend experienced a more modest increase of 3.8%, while accommodation spend declined by 2.6% in H1 2024.   Read the full report below or at https://lnkd.in/eHg3jTHU

Acquired for RM55 million in 2007, the 4-star beach resort was successfully sold to Plenitude Gateway Sdn Bhd, aligning with AmanahRaya REIT's objectives to reduce borrowings, optimize returns, and improve the yield of its asset portfolio. In another development, Langkawi anticipates enhanced air connectivity in 2024, with new services from Flydubai and AirAsia Indonesian, expanded services by Malaysia Airlines, and charter flight series with Poland's ITAKA, reflecting the island's growing appeal as a tourist destination with increased international and domestic accessibility. In the international segment, The Ascott Limited's lodging arm, Ascott, expands its lyf brand with the signing of eight new properties, totaling over 30 operational or upcoming lyf properties globally. The new additions span resort and city destinations like Bali, Penang, Sydney, and Frankfurt. From Stars to Keys... the Michelin effect…   Since its introduction in 1926, the Michelin Star rating system has had a profound effect on the restaurant industry – driving standards, innovation, and turning single venues into tourist attractions.   Since then, the Michelin Guide has moved online, incorporated a booking platform, and now launched 'Keys'—a new ranking system for hotels. Like Michelin Stars, ‘Keys’ for hotels operates on three tiers... One Key for a special stay, Two Keys for an exceptional experience, and Three Keys for an extraordinary stay.    5,000 hotels are set to receive a Key, and with culinary tourism expected to reach $2,934 billion by the end of 2032 (Zion Research), it’s the ideal time for Michelin to increase its influence within hospitality.   From the perspective of guests, there appears to be merit in the introduction of “Keys”. With a wide range of hotels currently grouped into the 5-star classification, further categorisation could aid travellers in making informed choices.   For hoteliers, it will be interesting to see the impact of Michelin’s “Keys” particularly regarding how it might shape the development of hotel concepts, akin to the influence of the Michelin Star system on restaurants. While Michelin Stars almost always come with increased revenue they can also come with significantly higher cost and risk which is only amplified when it comes to hotel investment.    So far, France leads with 24 Three-Key hotels. Italy, Spain, and the United States follow with 8, 5, and 11 Three-Keys respectively.
