What’s the difference between your team & an elite sports team? An elite sports team is full of - People who really want to be in the team - People who want to be their absolute best - People who have made sacrifices to be in the team - People for who being part of the team is the pinnacle of their career / lives - People who want to win & have the same shared goal - People who are willing to do everything it takes to help their teammates - People who understand psychology & how to win their mental battles Your team is full of - People who are ambitious & want to achieve great things - People who want more responsibility - People who want to learn & challenge themselves - People who are always positive & don’t want to do anything more than what they already do - People who support their teammates to their detriment of their own performance - People who are reliable & will turn up & do their job professionally every day, go home & return the next day & the next & do the same thing - People who think they should be doing your job - People who are out of their depth & think that they ‘will be found out’ - People who are cynical & ‘have seen & heard it all before’ - People who are resistant to change & 'will do what they’ve always done' - People who don’t remember why they do the job they do or know how they ended up working for you - People who are self-preserving so they can get to retirement - People who have big egos & are always the first to share their displeasure without substance behind it or suggestions for how to make it better - People who have no idea that there is a different way of thinking - People who are afraid to speak up & won’t challenge negative attitudes & behaviours - People who ‘won’t do that because it’s not my job’ - People who hide behind corporate BS - People who ‘work the system’ - People who won't put their cameras on, on Teams calls - People who are cynical about everything & are oblivious to just how bloody miserable they are - People who talk the talk & never walk the walk - People who make the same mistakes over & over again - People who blame other people & things for their lack of engagement & poor performance Leaders rarely get to choose their teams & just as your team are not an elite sports team, you're not an elite sports coach or manager so you won’t get a transfer budget or the power to drop & select whoever you want for your team. Embrace your team for who they are & celebrate the diverse set of people who you get the privilege to lead. Work together to bind your team environment by having the open & honest conversations that lead to trust & engagement. Then you can achieve any level of high performance. Stop trying to turn your team into the new All Blacks! Accept that they will never be that & lead in the real world to be the leader you want to be. What do you need to embrace about your team to get you working as you want to? #italwaysstartswithyou #teamcoaching #leadershipdevelopment

Also, elite sports teams have to turn up once, sometimes twice a week and "perform". Non sports teams are expected to perform all day every day. Imagine if the balance was the same and you spent 90% of your time in recovery and preparation at work! Burnout would disappear overnight.
