Felt honored to address today’s #EUCircularTalks webinar on “Improving existing life cycles of products to supply European markets.” European Economic and Social Committee recommends prioritizing #critical and #strategic #rawmaterials in #recycling and #waste legislation, and supporting #secondaryrawmaterials markets, particularly for materials essential to the ecological transition. ➡️ More specifically, the 🇪🇺 should support its waste treatment industry by preparing secondary raw materials for recycling in production processes. ➡️ It should also amend existing #waste legislation to prioritize the recycling and circularity of critical and strategic raw materials with the highest technical and economic recycling potential. ➡️ Next to recycling ♻️, the EU should establish well-functioning markets and minimise leakage to support secondary raw materials markets as it generally contributes to decreasing dependence on certain CRMs and to CO2 savings. For instance, about 630 million tonnes of #steelscrap alone are recycled yearly, which brings savings of approx. 950 million tonnes of CO2 (compared to virgin steel production). In the EU, more than 50% of some metals, such as #iron, #zinc or #platinum are already recycled and cover a substantial part of total EU consumption. For others, such as #rareearths and some niche metals, recycling only makes a marginal contribution. This is where we should look for development opportunities and targeted investments – the potential lies there.
#EUCircularTalks: Join us online tomorrow from 10:00 to 11:30, as we delve into how EU policy can scale up improvement opportunities and overcome the obstacles in creating a more #circulareconomy for products reliant upon #CRMs. EuRIC's Technical Advisor Rikarnto Bountis will be joining an expert panel discussing the importance of de-risking the CRMs supply and improving their #sustainable use across value chains. We hosted the 26th Sustainable Business Roundtable (SBRT) at ESMT Berlin yesterday. Established in 2011, the SBRT serves as a peer-to-peer learning network for leading global companies actively involved in the sustainability transformation. 🌐✨ Here are the key insights from the discussions: 🌍 Global Challenges: Businesses must collectively address climate change, unsustainable consumption, and rising inequality, recognizing the human crisis is intertwined with the climate crisis. 🤝 Equality in Demand: 84% of consumers advocate for equal wages, reflecting a societal push toward fair compensation. 🎯 Strategic Sustainability Focus: Organizations aspiring to an inspirational social sustainability strategy should focus on societal, employer, and community responsibilities for a fair and equal society. 🔄 Holistic Business Impact: Ambitions need alignment with robust systems for human rights, responsible taxation, and material issues specific to each industry. Topics may include disaster recovery, sustainable housing, regenerative agriculture, responsible mining, or digital responsibility. Thank you to all speakers (Raji Jayaraman, Julia Olofsson, Jakob Berndt, Paula Byrne, Manuel Bougeard, Gabriel Moscovici, Marike Mehlmann-Tripp, Hanna Kehl, Sven Matika, Malte Will, Bas van Abel, Hans Reitz) for sharing your insights! Thank you also to the participants for your active contribution! And last, but not least, thank you to my colleagues Olga Almqvist (she/her), Laura Ulloa, Jannis Röthemeier, Joern Soyke for your great support!
