I wrote a blog post for Thinking Through the Museum's website! In it, I briefly reflect on my experience in Paris last summer, where I visited two of the world's most famous museums. American Alliance of Museums (2013) states provenance requires the following info: 1. Name of current owner 2. Name(s) of (ALL) previous owner(s) 3. Dates of ownership 4. Places of ownership 5. Method of ownership transfer 6. Date of creation or discovery 7. Exact location of discovery 8. Export permit 9. Import documentation ICOM states, ‘if an INSTITUTION IS IN POSSESSION OF UNPROVENANCED OBJECTS IT SHOULD NOT HAVE THEM DISPLAYED OR BE USED BY THE INSTITUTION AS IT MAY APPEAR TO “CONDONE AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE ILLICIT TRADE” of cultural property.’ It’s time to stop exhibiting objects without full (I say again, FULL) provenance and start deaccessioning them. And please, don’t use the excuse of not knowing who rightful owners are or the originating societies are gone. That’s not a viable excuse to possess looted material from Africa, Asia, Middle East, and the Americas. Stop focusing on the looters & black market dealers. Museum are the ‘center of gravity’ for the antiquities trade. If museums continue to have unprovenanced or under-provenanced objects, the illicit market will continue unchecked.

I have selected this work for the offer "Behind the Masks of Utopian Joy", which will be held at Chili Art Gallery (13-15 Dimofontos Street, Thissio) from Thursday, 22 February to Saturday, 2 March 2024 and online via ARTgrid, for a month. I have four works to choose from. Two of them will be selected to be put on display during the exhibition. The works are available in 5 hand-signed prints on museum-quality materials.
