Just finished reading this insightful report from Esther Choy at Leadership Story Lab on Transforming Partnerships with Major Donors: Aligning the key values of first generation wealth creators and fundraisers in the age of “Winner Takes All”. As a former fundraising professional, I find this research invaluable in shaking up the tried and true fundraising experience. I thought I had a good understanding of the families I worked with, but this shows there's more than I imagined. Let's start with this fact: 68% of wealth is EARNED rather than INHERITED. My last fundraising job was near Silicon Valley, so I think I intuitively knew this, but what I didn't know was what was underneath that earned wealth--the values, the concerns, the desires. This report skillfully tells the stories of four different identities among the first-generation wealth creators.
