This opinion piece by Philip Loring suggests that developing technology and changing our values towards food are mutually exclusive when it comes to creating climate friendly food systems. I think we need both! We can use technology to get a better understanding of our food, within the realistic context of more and more urban living, away from the places where our food is grown. If we're not packing our bags to move back to the farm, then we need both education AND new tools to better understand and respect our food. This is exactly what we are doing at Mimica with Bump, our dynamic food spoilage indicator, to help us enjoy food to it's full true durability. And we've found it drives behaviour change too, with 85% people in our household trial reporting that having Bump on their food encouraged them to improve their storage habits, which would make the food last longer and reduce waste even further. 🥦🗑️🤔 Did you know that approximately 40% of food is going to waste? 🛒 In fact, it is estimated that around 931 million is wasted every year, and food service and retail are responsible for 26% and 13% of this total, respectively. 🚜 On the other hand it is estimated that 8.3% of all produced food is wasted at or around harvest and 7% during farm-stage post-harvest activities. 🏠 While individual consumer behaviour plays a role, we must look beyond household actions and focus on the stages of the supply chain where food waste and loss occur at scale. ♻️ Tackling food waste and loss along the supply chain is a collective effort that involves producers, retailers, consumers, and policymakers. By shifting our focus from individual consumer actions to systemic challenges, we can implement impactful solutions that address this pressing issue. 🤝 Collaboration, data sharing, technological innovation, and a rethinking of cosmetic standards can pave the way for a more sustainable and efficient food system. ✅ Reducing food waste and food loss must form part of strategies to achieve a more sustainable, fairer food system, where large-scale action is needed across the entire supply chain.
