To recognise the work of our volunteers over the course of an incredibly busy year, Taskforce Kiwi has launched our inaugural TFK Annual Awards, and we need your help to nominate deserving volunteers. Nominations take five minutes and are open until midnight on Sunday the 3rd of December 2023. The categories are: The True Grit Award: For the TFK volunteer who shed the most blood, sweat and tears to get the job done. The Engine Room Award: For the TFK volunteer who’s efforts powered rest of the team in the field. The Lead from the Front Award: For the TFK volunteer who's leadership has inspired and motivated others. The Unsung Hero Award: For the TFK volunteer who flies under the radar, putting in the hard yards in support of others. The Community Whisperer Award: For the TFK volunteer who has put the communities we serve first, ensuring that community needs are met. Reflections of my time leading Girl Scouts Troop 6000 continue with a hat tip to the Troop 6000 partnerships of which I am most proud. Without their buy-in, consistent dedication, and collaboration, Troop 6000 would not be possible. Grateful for: *Shelter providers, some of the most undervalued workers in New York. Because of their care and hustle, Troop 6000 expanded from 1 shelter to 10 shelters in 3 months under my leadership. *Volunteers who were eager to help, and finally had a concrete outlet. Most New Yorkers have never been inside a shelter and feel helpless around the overwhelming homeless crisis. Your mentoring raised girls’ resilience. I’m grateful to the volunteers who took the plunge, dove into the discomfort of dismantling their perceptions of homeless people and reflected on any white savior tendencies. The program we designed brought together vastly diverse populations in NYC, people who wouldn’t typically mingle outside of a subway car. I am proud of that peripheral but revolutionary act of community building across wealth, race, housing status, neighborhood, and education levels. Thank you for allowing my team to be your guide! *Elected officials who passed housing and homelessness policies that are good for people in shelters and the surrounding community, especially Diana Ayala, Gale A. Brewer, and Carlina Rivera. *Donors who shared their resources to support our work, especially those who first asked, “What do girls need?” *NYC Department of Homeless Services …The massive shelter system is more complex than many realize; without public servants’ tireless work to make sure everyone in need of a place to sleep has one, Troop 6000 would not have been able to grow to 2,5000 members. The troop’s success rests on the backs of DHS creating a coordinated citywide social safety network. #homeless #shelter #Troop6000 #partnership #volunteer

Core values in action. One Heart youth from one of our Kansas locations learned the value of giving back through their volunteering under the direction of the Salvation Army. Our deepest thanks to the Salvation Army for affording this wonderful opportunity to our youth to put their learning into meaningful, memorable action. Kansas Program Director Brenda Wagemaker points out that this opportunity reinforces important parts of the One Heart character-building curriculum: Perseverance – Keep working even when getting bored or tired. Teamwork – Working together (even if the youth do not know each other well from school) to complete the task while following directions Respect – Listening to guidance from Salvation Army staff Integrity – Taking food for themselves only after getting permission Responsibility – Taking pride in the task, getting out of bed and being ready for the work Self-Control – Staying on task and refraining from taking the food Compassion – Acting for the sake of those in need #oneheart #characterinaction #partneringwithourcommunities

Two words - community service. It's never too late to start and donate time to your community. A colleague, personal advisor and former big law firm attorney is doing just that - with a ministry he's developed at 42nd and Post Road. There are services 2x a month with a dinner. Soccer is the volunteer sport pulling together Latino and Black families. Those in need can apply for rent support while getting back into employment. A partnership has been developed with IPS for a school that has a 60 percent ESL population. Reality is realization. You don't need a vision board or a list. And you shouldn’t be accepting this kind of work for a click on your resume. You just need to roll up your sleeves and get it done. Pick correctly and commit. And if someone isn’t doing it right, do it yourself. Once you do, most all else will fall into place. #communityservice #volunteers #indy
