"How DARE you encourage my child to seek a career opportunity in Construction?" Yikes 😬 Yes, this is an actual message someone received, and yes there is a HUGE misconception about what construction is nowadays! I believe people have a preconceived notion of construction and the lifestyles and culture associated with that. Why? I believe it's because we haven't done a good enough job of showcasing who we are as an industry. Other people and other industries have told our story for us. That's not ideal 🙅♂️ Thankfully, things are changing and there is light at the end of the tunnel! With more companies understanding the need to tell their story, showcase their people, and unveil the hundreds of different career opportunities within construction, we're beginning to see a shift. We need to keep pushing, keep sharing, keep being transparent and keep telling our stories! I want to thank Ben Dundass from Eastern Valley Electric LTD, Justin Bontkes from Caliber Projects, Peter Mihalech from B&B Contracting Group and James Stiksma from Canadian Septic for taking the time to share their stories and their perspectives on construction and what that means for the coming generations! #constructionindustry #leadershipdevelopment #storytelling

At Helix, our mission is simple: Intelligent Building. Bradley's continuing journey within our business is a perfect example of how our building blocks of Building Respect, Building Trust, and Building Success work together. As part of our Building Respect campaign, Nic Davies, our CEO, met Bradley Turrell at Newbury College whilst hosting a careers day. Inspired by Nic, Bradley, who had never thought about a career in construction, approached and asked for work experience. For us, Building Trust is about investing time, effort, and resources into our staff, even those on work experience. For 9 months, we have shown him the ropes, encouraging him to work across all disciplines, learn to make proper builders’ tea, manage his own time, and decide if a career in construction was right for him. And today, we are celebrating Building Success, as he has been accepted to Westminster University to study a degree in Quantity Surveying part-time whilst remaining with Helix. Well done, Bradley! #Construction #CareerDevelopment #BuildingSuccess

Without Engineers, Vision Remains a Dream ... In the world of construction, milestones like a grand opening for a beautifully designed space are always celebrated. Architects and developers often stand in the spotlight, applauded for their vision and execution. But as someone working closely with these incredible teams, I can't help but notice that the work of engineers, which underpins every project's success, often remains in the background. Engineering isn't glamorous in the way that high-end finishes or lush landscapes are, but it is the core of what makes a project functional, safe, and sustainable. Those iconic spaces simply wouldn't exist without the planning, expertise, and foresight of engineers who ensure everything works efficiently and reliably. At Goldfish & Bay, I see every day how engineering is the cornerstone of every great project. Engineers' contributions are integrated into every aspect of a building—from mechanical systems that keep occupants comfortable to fire systems that ensure safety and hydraulic systems that provide water effectively. I recently came across an insightful McKinsey report, "The Next Normal in Construction," which made me reflect on how engineering is perceived in our industry. While construction and commissioning phases usually get the spotlight, the crucial contributions of engineering and design tend to be overlooked. Engineers transform visions into reality by ensuring every curve, every space, and every feature works seamlessly behind the scenes. It's time to give engineering the recognition it deserves as the backbone of every great project. To all our partners—architects, designers, developers—the commitment of engineers supports your vision in every way. What truly makes a building come alive is not just how it looks, but how it works. And that's the essence of engineering. Let’s celebrate the entire project team, every discipline that makes a construction milestone possible. Let’s acknowledge those who solve the behind-the-scenes challenges—ensuring systems function with precision and that the project delivers on every promise, now and for years to come. To our peers in engineering: your work is essential, your expertise is critical, and it deserves recognition. It’s time we share your story so that the full value of what you do can be truly appreciated 🤍 #EngineeringMatters #BehindTheScenes #CelebratingEngineers McKinsey & Company #GoldfishAndBay Engineers Australia
