What is a Key Account Director, really? They're the top of the food chain for individual contributor sellers. But, the term is often misused so let’s get clear on the definition 👇 A true Key Account Director (or Key Account Manager) is an uber seller at a big, public tech company with a large portfolio of products. They have no direct reports, but they command influence across the entire organization. They steward the relationship with one huge customer (think $10B and up). They set the strategic direction of the relationship. They spend their time aligning at the executive level. They keep other reps from going rogue and damaging the relationship. They arbitrate disagreements between reps competing for comp credit on big multi-product deals. They often work personally with celebrity CEO’s to negotiate huge eight and nine figure deals. It’s often thought of as a ‘destination role’ and sellers who achieve it stay for years. The typical path is: - AE - Strategic Account Manager - Mega Dealer - Key Account Director I had that role at Oracle, and it was quite a ride.
