When should you hire the first dedicated customer success person in a tech startup? In the early stages it is expected that the Sales, Product and Engineering teams share the workload among themselves. - Sales does traditional customer success function and maintains relationship and continuity. - Product leads implementation and solution design (services function) and also provides best practice guidance. - Engineering provides support and troubleshooting help. Companies need to hire a CS person in advance of a situation where the # of customers x associated volume of customer related activities increase to a point and things begin to fall through the cracks. Companies need dedicated resources at such time who can provide leverage and efficiently orchestrate internal resources What do you think? Is the Solutions Engineer / Sales Engineer role getting more popular? I was talking to a VP at a successful tech company about a year ago and he said they basically built the company by hiring Solutions Engineers. Since then, I’ve been hearing “Solutions Engineer” more and more. It makes sense. Instead of having an AE without technical knowledge who needs to invite an SE with technical knowledge to join the sales process at some point, you can just combine those two roles into one.
