Through the lens of my own reflections, I'd like to share some key insights from our discussions with my students today with you . 1. At its core, philanthropy embodies a profound love for humanity. It's a principle that transcends mere action, reflecting a deep-seated commitment to uplifting others. 2. While charitable giving is an important metric of our willingness to support others, it should not be viewed as the definitive measure of one's humanity. Instead, it serves as a tangible expression of our compassion, offering a framework within which we can evaluate and engage in our philanthropic journey. 3. It has been observed that minority groups often participate in volunteer activities at lower rates compared to their white counterparts. This statistic opens up a crucial conversation about the barriers to engagement and how we can collectively work towards a more inclusive culture of giving. 4. Interestingly, there has been a noticeable increase in significant donations from women, driven by factors such as inheritance, familial trends, or positions of wealth. This shift not only highlights the changing dynamics of philanthropy but also underscores the growing influence of women in shaping the landscape of charitable giving. #nonprofit #charity #philanthropy #fundraising

Who will be the superpowers of philanthropy in the next 25 years? Who will have the capacity and resources to influence social, economic, and political arenas? The answer is women. Historically, women have always played crucial roles in philanthropy. Early social service work was seen as “women’s work.” Female philanthropy started with parochial institutions, where nuns, deaconesses, and women of all faiths offered comfort to the marginalized in their communities. Now, with women holding more than half of private wealth in the U.S. and the capacity to influence global change, their impact is poised to grow exponentially. Despite progress, support for women's and girls' organizations remains low, receiving just 1.8% of charitable giving. However, women are stepping up to fill this gap, often giving broadly, holistically, and collectively. They focus on aligning their passion with their resources, working collaboratively, and demanding transparency about the impact of their contributions. Women’s philanthropy offers vast opportunities: from supporting traditional nonprofits to becoming angel investors and engaging in impact investing. In my role as a philanthropic advisor, I work to help women donors align their values with their charitable giving, grow their confidence and celebrate their achievements. #PhilanthropyConcierge #WDM2024 #WomensPhilanthropy #WomenInLeadership https://lnkd.in/gSZhsadi

While recent economic and sociopolitical shakeups might cause some concern that we will see an extended drought in philanthropic spending in 2024, many in the field remain optimistic, arguing that philanthropy has often proven resilient during challenging times. Additionally, experts have pointed out that modern philanthropy has several advantages. We're also seeing new and emerging models take shape, so there is a great deal of recovery potential. That’s said, as the article notes “2024 needs more serious philanthropists than ever”. https://lnkd.in/g5ZRQ3Ze #Philanthropy #Nonprofits

💭 When you hear the term “philanthropist,” what do you think? Most people picture big-budget donors like Bill Gates or Warren Buffett who provide capital for high-profile charitable projects. 👉 This is one type of philanthropy, but not the only type. The definition shared below vastly increases who is and can be a philanthropist. 💙 Many “philanthropists” with a capital “P” are often rich, often white, often men, and often American. 💡💡💡But if we expand our definition of the word, we also broaden our perception of philanthropists to encompass “a greater diversity of donors – including women, people of various ethnic and racial backgrounds, and donors of all wealth levels.” Take a few minutes to familiarize yourself more with this new wave of philanthropy: https://bit.ly/3MHylSO

Enjoyed reading this! Very thought-provoking and resonated deeply with my own experiences in the development sector. Without genuine inclusion, the development sector often feels like a dance floor in the Global South, with the Global North watching from a balcony. From above, everything might look orderly and as it should, but this perspective misses the nuanced reality of those on the dance floor. Those intricate steps, the rhythm, and the energy - all signal the deeper insights and challenges faced by local communities. Unfortunately, the global north rarely steps down to the dance floor to truly engage with and understand these realities. I completely agree that there is a need for a paradigm shift towards more equitable and inclusive development practices, where everyone has a say in the music that plays and the steps we all take. This is a powerful call to action for embracing a model that values the perspectives and contributions from all corners of the room, ensuring sustainable and impactful development. #InclusiveDevelopment #GlobalPerspectives #SustainableImpact #Globalsouth #Africa #Kenya #Tanzania
