Last week, 28 members of our Compounding and Technical team rallied together to give the Frome sensory garden a refresh. 💪🌳 Utilising their allocated ESV (Employer Supported Volunteering) days, the THG LABS team rolled up their sleeves and dedicated themselves to a day of manual labour. They took on various tasks, from landscaping and levelling, to reconstructing garden beds and painting park benches. Their efforts were aimed at breathing new life into the garden, making it an ideal environment for both people and pollinators. 🌼🐝 The team's collaborative spirit and hard work ensured that the garden was transformed into a welcoming and vibrant space for the community to enjoy – great work, guys! 💚

Reflection on the environmental project: I participated in the volunteerism project through the Soft Skills & Basic Volunteerism course under the PPD1041. It was an enlightening experience that made me reflect on my involvement and the results. After being introduced to the project, my group and I had discussions about our next steps. We decided to create Lanyard Cards using recycled materials such as plastic and drink cups. This unique project not only stimulated my creativity but also raised my awareness of environmental issues. Making these cards helped me become more aware of my environmental responsibilities. Seeing waste products turn into something useful emphasized the significance of resource management. Furthermore, the project taught me the importance of cooperation and collaborative efforts. As we worked together, our group's creativity thrived, and we came up with innovative ways to reuse unwanted materials. This experience has not only improved my practical skills but also contributed to environmental protection. In summary, the volunteerism initiative provided a dynamic platform for not only meeting course requirements but also imparting a sense of responsibility for our environment. It has been a creative and enlightening adventure that has improved both my skill set and my awareness of my surroundings. Here is a picture of me and my group discussing how to implement the Lanyard Card project using reused plastic and cups. 🍶 🌳

After nearly 9 years as a self-employed, it was quite a change when I decided 6 months ago to become a “regular employee” and switch from being a consultant or supplier to being a customer on the other side of the desk. There were many reasons why I chose Hempel A/S, but networking certainly played a significant role during this transition. It made the process easier. Personally, it was important for me to land in a place with strong values, where social responsibility was taken seriously, and where there was room to make the right decisions. And I must say, I’ve landed in the right place. However, I quickly noticed what happens when you put a fish like me into the corporate aquarium. Things change, and the people you work with adapt. I’m somewhat proud to say that I can feel several of my colleagues have stepped up, expressed themselves more, and set higher expectations in their daily work. My goal has always been to elevate others, whether they’re colleagues, customers, suppliers, or competitors. They’re all just human beings, and the ambition to contribute so that everyone does a little better has become my driving force in my “golden years” 🤓 . Returning to the company’s values: Hempel works hard every day to make the world better for both animals and humans. There are initiatives worldwide where children are offered education. This week, there’s a special initiative here at HQ aimed at helping Danish/local children with ADHD have a better everyday life. On the research side, efforts are focused on making the paint more environmentally friendly, reducing waste, and even recycling the paint removed from ships to produce new (and even better) paint. It’s satisfying to know that even if you’re not out there protesting, a Greenpeace member, sponsoring 10 children in Africa, or blocking a highway exit, you’re still contributing to ensuring that our one planet can be passed on to our children, grandchildren, and beyond. Lastly, I must commend those who designed and set up our HQ in Lyngby. It’s truly impressive! So if you come across a job posting from Hempel in Lyngby, you can be sure that the environment is top-notch. The picture is taken during my bike ride home along Dyrehaven. In the background, between the trees, you can see Hempel’s white building - well Hempel is also located close to the Highway which You cannot see on the picture 😀 (if you come by car). I look forward with excitement to what will happen in the next 6 months and beyond. Even though I am just one among approximately 7,000 other employees, I can feel that I am making a difference. And that means everything when you’re passionate about the work you do. And as a final note, I’m certain that my late father, who passed away 3 years ago, would be quite pleased. We lived by the water, and we contributed every year to Hempel's revenue 😀 Thank you Martin Svendsen and Carim El Husseini for our relationship.. And thank you Magdalena Marek for signing.. 😀

Hoping loads of people go and if you’re based in the South East or easy reach of London please give this serious consideration. With the swing to the political right in the EU and beyond we need our next Government to show leadership on everything around the Green agenda. All Our futures are under threat and if current leaders do nothing or ignore the collapse of our natural systems then I fear that young people especially will have no choice but to protest strongly. Better to act positively now and consult meaningfully with the leaders of the future to find bold and effective solutions NOW, while there’s still the opportunity. #greeneconomy #greenbusiness #climateactionnow #futureleaders
Have you seen our Financial Times Ad today and will you be joining us at the Restore Nature Now march on 22 June in London? Business Declares is bringing together businesses/employees at the event as a visible demonstration that it's not just environmental organisations that care about nature - businesses actually care too. Encourage your employees to join the march. Here's an example of how to do so from AG Comms | Certified B Corp "Because this is a non working day - it’s challenging to get team members to travel from the North to London when they have families. We will offer this as a paid day of work or TOIL as this is part of our paid employee activism policy." Thanks to our Ad sponsors: Ecotricity, WHEB, Triodos Bank, Ecology Building Society, Ecosia, Cafédirect Plc, Greenhouse Communications, Make My Money Matter, AG Comms | Certified B Corp, Riverford Organic Farmers, Bates Wells Find out more and see you there: bit.ly/BDRestoreNatureNow #restorenaturenow

Queenstown Carbon Counting Seminar I've attended countless talks on embodied and operational carbon, and this was one of the most comprehensive, concise and engaging overviews on the subject that I think I've ever seen. I'll admit though, that I wasn't too involved in the preparation of this Seminar. All credit to the team that put this together. There is no 'one solution' to reducing carbon emissions - every building is different, and bespoke low-carbon designs need to be developed for each building. But the approach and methodology that designers need to take to achieve a cost-effective gold standard is clear to us. Yes - the MBIE regulations will cause some headaches. Once we're out of that teething phase though, all of our future developments will be carbon conscious. The positive impact will be huge, and it an exciting change to be a part of.
