Floodplain reconnection has emerged as a crucial solution to mitigating flooding, improving water quality, and supporting biodiversity along the Mississippi River corridor. In this episode, Chris Rice of The Nature Conservancy discusses the restoration of Mollicy Farms, the largest floodplain reconnection project ever undertaken in the U.S. Chris explains the extensive efforts involved in breaching levees, planting millions of trees, and reestablishing natural water flows to revive the 25-square mile floodplain along the Ouachita River in Louisiana. The conversation highlights the significant environmental and community benefits of restoring such areas, including floodwater storage, habitat creation, and water filtration. Additionally, Chris delves into the partnerships and challenges encountered throughout the project, providing insights into how similar initiatives can be implemented elsewhere. The Mississippi By Nature series is supported by the Walton Family Foundation and outfitted by Patagonia. #water #waternews #watersolutions #naturebasedsolutions #floodplain #mississippiriver

Last week, we brought together an amazing team of experts for a workshop in Nassau to tackle one of nature's most pressing issues: restoring blocked mangrove creeks. 🌿Why? Because healthy mangroves mean happy fish, reduced flooding, and more resilient communities! Mangroves play a crucial role in supporting biodiversity, protecting shorelines, and even fighting climate change by capturing carbon. But when roads are built across mangrove creeks, they often block natural water flow. This limits fish and other species' access to nursery areas and reduces mangrove productivity. Restricted water flow can also lead to salt buildup or increased flooding, which can kill native plants and put lives and property at greater risk during storms. Our workshop featured representatives from government departments, conservation groups, and local stakeholders, all committed to giving our mangroves the love they deserve. But it's not just about the science—it's about the people. We're working hand-in-hand with local communities to ensure our restoration efforts are community-centered and driven by local knowledge and needs. Want to dive deeper? Who are the guardians of the coast? 🌊 The answer is #Mangroves. They provide a haven for wildlife, serve as crucial carbon sinks, act as natural water filters and shield our coastlines from erosion. Despite their vital importance, they have yet to receive the attention and protection they deserve - losing 35% of them in a mere five years ❤️🩹 In response to this urgent call for action, Global Mangrove Alliance and Blue Carbon Initiative have combined their efforts to introduce the "Best Practice Guidelines for Mangrove Restoration." This guide is crafted to: 🤝 Encourage collaborative efforts between governments, investors, and restoration professionals 🌱 Lay down a solid groundwork for both the conservation and revitalisation of #MangroveEcosystems 🪜 Provide a comprehensive set of actionable steps tailored for civil society, businesses, and financial stakeholders. Protecting mangroves is one of many #NaturebasedSolutions and a step forward to a #NaturePositive future. Standing along the goal to protect #biodiversity, the upcoming #WorldClimateSummit will host a panel session to explore innovations we need for #biodiversity together with experts across sectors 🌍 Read the full guideline 🔎 bit.ly/45NgVe6 Join the Summit on 7-8 December ✍️ bit.ly/WCS2023Register #BiodiversityFriday

Chief Climate Officer, Abt Global | Leveraging Public and Private Sector Impact for Climate, Health, Equity, and Inclusive Economic Growth
$18 million in new investments have been allocated to "ensure the ready source of native seeds to combat climate change and enhance landscape resilience", according to the Department of the Interior. This is a critical step forward, and it wouldn't be possible without the leadership of indigenous advocates like Secretary Deb Haaland. This funding will help "advance projects that are restoring white bark pine trees, which define some of the most treasured high-elevation western landscapes; converting 500 acres of degraded rangelands in Colorado to short grass prairie and sage shrubland; and working with the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribe in Montana to upgrade and expand the Tribe’s greenhouse facilities to improve its ability to grow native seedlings for regional restoration efforts." #ClimateResilience #Conservation #Biodiversity

I'm still buzzing about The Nature Conservancy in Texas achieving its 1 Million Acres protected milestone! Check out this excellent StoryMap, created by Lauren Lombardo and our team, to learn more: https://lnkd.in/ghs5kddr 1 million acres is big but how big? If you added up the municipal footprints of these American cities below (not their metro areas) - it would roughly add up to 1 million acres

The Forest for Cornwall has achieved a milestone of planting more than 600,000 trees, It was equivalent to one tree for every resident in the county. The project, supported by Cornwall Council, covers about 1,480 acres (600 hectares) of land. The project has involved volunteers, businesses, farmers, community groups, schools, landowners, town and parish councils. Farmers can benefit from the Woodland Creation Partnership, funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs' Nature for Climate Fund, which provides finance and support for tree-planting on their land. https://lnkd.in/eGBAJn-w Forestry England #woodland #habitats #environment #sustainability #education #nature #climatechange #conservation Forest for Cornwall wanted to reach one million trees by 2025. https://lnkd.in/e5s6syVb
