In this episode, Jess Harvie (Jess H.), Global DEI and Social Impact Leader (formerly at Snap and Justworks), highlights how trust and curiosity underpinned the work she did bringing The Action to Catalyze Tech Report (ACT Report) to life. The ACT report is an initiative to get the entire tech industry to collaborate around DEI work to 10x DEI results. This initiative stemmed from the realization that tech companies have been trying for years to solve systemic DEI on their own, while the reality was that they end up playing a game of diversity musical chairs, with DEI employees shifting from one tech company to another. Jess shares that the key to creating this coalition to accelerate impact was building trust, which she did by communicating effectively and being vulnerable with other people. Curiosity helped her understand value to other stakeholders which allowed her to articulate the vision in a way that built trust and got them onboard. While watching opulent scenes of the Netflix show "Bridgerton," I was struck by a profound dissonance. As someone with Indian heritage, the series' reimagined Regency England feels unsettling, given that in reality, my ancestors were barred from such grandeur; they lived in a world where colonial signs reading "Dogs and Indians not allowed" were a harsh reality. The show's glossy diversity, while visually pleasing, sidesteps the stark inequalities and exclusionary practices of the era—practices that would have kept people like me at a rigid distance from the echelons of society it portrays. It leaves one to wonder, as we consume entertainment that paints over the past, how do we reconcile these gilded fictions with the truth of history's deep-seated prejudices? This sense of disquiet resonates beyond the realm of period dramas; it echoes in the corridors of technological innovation, where the 'Bridgerton Paradox' looms large. In tech, this paradox manifests when attempts to infuse diversity into historical narratives or datasets are done with a heavy hand, often glossing over the realities of exclusion and injustice. The paradox challenges innovators and creators: How can we honor diversity in tech without negating the true stories of those who came before us? How do we build inclusive futures while fully acknowledging past exclusions, rather than painting over them? I GOT TRIGGERED🫣 I was reminded yesterday of one of the reasons I started the FAB Business Club and how easy it is to take what we have for granted. Someone was talking about another organisation I used to be part of, somewhere they felt they had found their tribe. My experience was not the same. To me it didn’t feel like a psychologically safe or very supportive space. There seemed to be a lot of judging and mask wearing. There was a lot of ego driven activity and the big fish in a small pond syndrome was very real. I experienced a lot of passive aggressive behaviour too. I felt like everyone had their guard up. The actions were not matching the words or supposed ethos of the collective. I’m not saying that everyone who was part of it was like this and but the company culture was definitely not aligned with my values. Because of my previous (extremely bad experience) of this type of culture I knew I wasn’t ever going to be 100% comfortable with the overall vibe. It is so important to me that the FAB Business Club energy isn’t tainted by any of this aforementioned stuff. It’s for strong, intelligent, empowered women who are keen for us all to rise together. Supportive, collaboration over competition, a genuine desire for sisterhood, open and honest conversations without fear of judgement, business and self development plus lots of laughs. I created the type of community I did want by being very clear on what I didn’t want. It seems to have worked the foundations are strong and now we grow.
