Accessibility and access needs is not special treatment or as an afterthought -‐-- it is a human right. Closed captions is a right. ASL interpretatations is a right. Extra time and sensory breaks is a right. Universal design is a right. It is not an inclusive environment if accessibility is excluded or ignored. Institutions, policies, and organizations must be accessible. Accessibility is our way to become involved in the community. We must continue to open and talk about our access needs. Do not let someone tell you that it is "special treatment". Tell them: access is a right.

Hamilton Health Sciences (HSS) serves a multicultural community of 2.3 million people and they knew they needed to meet the challenge of addressing language barriers in healthcare head-on. With support from the Ontario Bioscience Innovation Organization (OBIO), HHS partnered with Voyce to expand language access for patients by: ✅ Providing medical interpretation in 240 languages. ✅ Improving access from previous interpreter solutions with near-immediate connections to our interpreters via remote video and audio options. ✅ Making Voyce a standard across HHS’s care units after positive feedback from the pilot. When HHS and Voyce partnered together we found “game-changing” results which you can learn more about in our case study here: https://buff.ly/3RFoRKB

[Activity Analysis] The "PATIENT ENGAGEMENT" Project I am collecting some articles, papers, books, videos, and personal notes about Healthcare Experience Design. Some new ideas and insights will be published under a category called "Patient Engagement": https://lnkd.in/gMYeGhTM In general, I see Design as an activity. At this level, we focus on new models of design activities. For example, the attached paper introduces "Selective Participatory Activities". In particular, we pay attention to concrete case studies of healthcare research, design, and development. For example, the attached paper is based on a case study about social isolation and older adults. If you are interested in this project, DM if you want to share your stories or resources. #patientengagement (9/25/2023)
How do you design with people when there are limited resources? In a new article, we propose a preliminary model of selective participatory activities and report a case study in designing for social connections of older adults. Engaging stakeholders in all activities of the design process is ideal, but in resource-limited projects typical in health, selecting some core activities for participation could support both stakeholder agency and project viability. Experts must adjust and balance influence in different activities to achieve meaningful participation of all stakeholders. It was great to collaborate with Aaron Guest, Wenqi Winnie Zheng, Allie Peckham, MSW, PhD, Yumeng X., Qijia (Euca) You, and Brad Doebbeling and co-author this article.
