The first Violence Against Children and Youth Survey (#VACS) conducted exclusively in a humanitarian setting, specifically among refugees in #Uganda, provides data on the prevalence and impact of violence against children and youth in these contexts. The study reveals high levels of sexual, physical, and emotional violence, in refugee settings, with females being more likely than males to experience sexual violence and males being more likely than females to experience physical violence. VAC perpetrators were often individuals known by the survivors, and although many children and youth knew where to seek help, disclosure and help-seeking were low for both genders. The study underscores the importance of comprehensive survey data to inform efforts to address violence against children in humanitarian settings. 🔗Read more at https://lnkd.in/dCf-yXsn cc: Population Council

On #SocialJusticeDay it's imperative to highlight the plight of Rohingya refugees, who face grave human rights abuses. Gender-based violence remains a disproportionate threat to women and girls across Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar. 🔍 New research: The impact of childhood violence on health outcomes in refugee settlements in Uganda A study involving over 2,200 young people aged 13–24 living in Uganda's refugee settings reveals important insights into the intersection of disability and childhood experiences of violence. Key Findings: 👉 Higher rates of sexual violence in childhood among those with disabilities compared to those without. 👉Significant associations between the type of disability and the increased likelihood of experiencing violence. 👉Females with disabilities who experienced violence in childhood are at a heightened risk of severe mental distress and other negative health outcomes. These findings highlight the need for targeted child protection and response interventions that address the specific vulnerabilities of disabled children and youth, with a special focus on female children. On 19 June 2015, the UN General Assembly designated this date as the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict to raise awareness, honour victims and survivors, and recognise those fighting to end these crimes. Women and girls, disproportionately affected by conflict, suffer immensely from sexual violence. Conflict-related sexual violence includes rape, sexual slavery, forced prostitution, and other severe abuses. Despite being a war crime, perpetrators often face no consequences. Empowering Women for Excellence Initiative's Together We Can (TWC) project supports women and girls in Kaduna State, Nigeria, offering mental health, psychosocial support, and economic empowerment to build resilience and reduce violence. This paper provides a scoping review of research on gender-based violence among Somali refugee women in different parts of the world. Using the socio-ecological model as a framework, we identified societal, community and individual factors contributing to the experience of GBV. The research reveals that oftentimes, institutions that work closely with this population have a limited understanding of how closely culture affects the willingness and ability to seek help about GBV. Based on our analysis, we suggest ways in which social institutions and healthcare providers can provide culturally-safe support to Somali refugee women who have experienced some form of GBV. https://lnkd.in/emPnk72m

Lavern Deer & Female Development World Organization recognizes UN World Day Against Trafficking In Persons 2024: Leave No Child Behind Globally, one in three victims of human trafficking is a child, and the majority of these trafficked children are girls. According to the Global Report on Trafficking in Persons (GLOTIP) by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), children are twice as likely as adults to face violence during trafficking. The proliferation of online platforms poses additional risks, as children often connect to these sites without adequate safeguards. Children are subjected to various forms of trafficking, including forced labour, crime, begging, illegal adoption, sexual abuse and the online dissemination of abusive images, and some are also recruited into armed groups. The reasons for child trafficking are also numerous. Some of the most prominent are: poverty, insufficient support for unaccompanied minors in the face of increasing migration and refugee flows, armed conflicts, dysfunctional families, and lack of parental care. To date, the fight against child trafficking has not been effective. There is an urgent need to take comprehensive measures to protect vulnerable groups and help child victims. This requires joint efforts at national and international level. States must prioritize the protection of children, strengthen laws, improve law enforcement and provide more resources to combat child trafficking. Preventive measures should focus on addressing root causes such as poverty and inequality. Particular attention should be paid to the trafficking of unaccompanied refugee minors. It is important to strengthen child protection networks and adapt criminal law to better meet the needs of children. This year, we observe the 10th World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. This year’s campaign focuses on raising awareness of the causes and vulnerabilities associated with child trafficking. It emphasizes the critical need for dedicated support for child victims of trafficking and urges the public and policymakers to address the current shortcomings and accelerate action to #EndHumanTrafficking. https://lnkd.in/eArUR2sN Full conversation on YouTube: Queen Up Chronicles Talk 1-S3-E6 #laverndeer #ProtectTheChildren #un #WorldDayAgainstTraffickinginPersons

It is important to break the stigma surrounding menstruation and empower women to take charge of their own health and well-being. Providing access to affordable and sustainable menstrual products is essential to ensure that all women have the resources they need to manage their periods safely and comfortably. It's time to prioritize menstrual hygiene and ensure that every woman has the support and resources she needs to manage her period with dignity and respect. Support our initiative as we aim to empower at least 100 women on Menstrual Hygiene. UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency United Nations UN Women United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) COMAGEND COMAGEND
