Dave Lewis’ Post

Are you a recruiter who suffers from premature celebration? Most recruiters I work with celebrate a placement upon offer acceptance. This is when the deal dances, theme music, bells, wheels of fortune and rounds of applause are instigated. Mentally, it causes recruiters to shut down with massively important stages of the process still to perform. There’s still the resignation to manage, a potential counter offer to deal with and work in pre-boarding and on-boarding the candidate. But guess what? This often doesn’t happen. It results in drop outs which are massively frustrating for the client as well as the recruiter. Celebrate when they start (maybe after your rebate ends if you’re particularly prudent). And build a strategy to consistently manage the no-mans land between offer acceptance and start-date. If you’ve got a clear pre-boarding strategy that you can share with your client, you’re showing more care and attention than the vast majority of your competitors. You're also going to reduce the drop out rate between offer acceptance and start. #recruitment #recruitmenttraining

Mmmmm. In my early days I definitely celebrated when an offer was verbally accepted. Then learned a few hard lessons. A 'placement' which happened in the first six months of my recruitment career, with Rover Group, resulted in them calling me on the morning he was due to start asking where he was. WTF ? A phone call later and I discovered he had changed his mind. I felt like I had been hit by a train. So many things I hadn't done. But, learn from your mistake eh ? I certainly didn't want to feel like that again.

I only "celebrate" when the fee is in my account, hence why I put as much effort helping them manage the resignation, a potential counter (this part starts early in the process for me, almost at the initial stages "what if?...", onboarding ( still end up sorting IT, did they get the car, has their WFH kit come through etc), through to their leaving day, first day, checking how the first week went. If a recruiters simply switches off when the offer is made and moves on to the next deal then they pretty much deserve it when things fall through.

All good points in the comments but waiting for the probation period to end before celebrating?! A bit joyless imo, Where's the sense of giddy excitement, however fleeting. lol

Back in agency days I would never want to celebrate until that money hits my account (and never wanted to be paid until the end of the rebate so once the money was there is was mine!)

Totally agree, Dave. For me, the celebration doesn’t start until the candidate walks in on day one. Offer acceptance is just the beginning. So much can happen between then and the start date. I stay closely involved with both the candidate and the client during that time to ensure everything stays on track. It’s frustrating when things fall through, but being proactive during that crucial phase really helps reduce dropouts.

Couldn't agree more. Celebrating before even sending an invoice is crazy!!

I celebrate all the stages with my candidates. Getting the interview and the next one. The offer and then the relief of giving notice. I celebrate the exciting day before they start and their first day. I celebrate their first, 2nd and 3rd months. Their first year. Recruiters need to never stop thinking what needs to be done next and what their candidates need but it’s a lot of fun to also celebrate for every little reason!

Always lookout for blind spots, have a backup process in place, and reinforce it as much as possible. One key lesson I've learned from working in sales and recruitment is to never count your chickens before they hatch. And - Your journey of losing the placement and the client starts the day they sign the dotted line 😊

The celebrations start after the probation ends, and I feel like every party has got what they bargained for, i.e a decent role with a good employer, a solid candidate that's delivering and progressing well, and we've fully secured the fee we've worked so hard for. I can't bring myself to celebrate before this point to be honest.
