Aviation Executive Recruiter | Human Resources Manager | Onboarding Specialist | DoD Skillbridge Program Manager
Met a "unicorn" pilot this week...who absolutely blew my mind! Despite having lower hours, she has a very useful type rating and many hours in type. At the beginning of our phone screen, I paused my usual questions and said, "You know you are a unicorn, right?" She was humble and seemed unaware of her unique status. Curious, I asked, "How did you manage to get a type rating and significant time in type with your total time?" She explained that she did the following: 1) took a job at an operator as line support when she had very low hours. Willing to do any job in aviation while building time, her hard work and dedication caught the Chief Pilot's attention. He promised her a pilot position once she reached a certain hour target. They gave her a very useful type rating (useful vs. not-so-useful these days is a different conversation 😃). 2) to build those hours, she bought a small Cessna and flew as much as possible to reach the goal. After securing the pilot position, she sold the Cessna. Moral of the story: look for any job in aviation, what I call a "foot-in-the-door" job. If it makes sense financially, consider buying a plane (perhaps with friends to share costs) and selling it once you've built your time. (Disclaimer: I'm not a financial advisor so do your homework on the "buy a plane" idea...it worked for us to buy a plane but might not work for everyone). #Aviation #PilotLife #CareerTips #AviationJobs #BuildingFlightTime

5 years building talent at SpaceX | 15 years building leaders in aerospace & technology | ex-Air Force Pilot & recovering Ironman
Flying into Wichita yesterday, I was reminded of how many times I flew into here as an instructor pilot. One maneuver we practiced a lot here is called a circle. A circle is used in instrument flying to fly an approach to one runway but then land on another runway. This is useful when an airport only has an instrument approach to one runway, but winds or other factors mean you can’t land on that runway. Circling lets you use that approach to get below the clouds, then you circle around the airport to land on the other runway. Why did we use Wichita so much? Because it was hard. Several factors made the approach into the airport quite technical and pushed student pilots to their limits. And some would fail. Often, in training, we get so concerned with people passing the lessons that we wind up lowering the bar too much and a lot of people just get bored. Do you want everyone to fail? No. But if everyone can do what you are asking them to do on the first try, you probably aren’t pushing people hard enough. In the case of flying, it was easy to know why we needed to push people. If we didn’t push them in training, then they might not be prepared when it really mattered, when they were flying themselves and lives were on the line. It might be less dramatic, but the same is true in your compliance or manager training. People need to practice things that make them uncomfortable. That is the only way they will actually get better. #PerformanceImprovement #Training #Development #Flying

The Advanced Air Mobility ("AAM") ecosystem needs more immersive experiences of what hopes/wants/proposes to come to our communities. Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology is in New York (Queens) adjacent to LaGuardia Airport headed up by Sharon DeVivo. Great partnership! Budgets are growing as production scales up. Investment dollars, and revenue, flow through the ecosystem. Joby Aviation is finding a way. Continue to gain approval, and commitment of future resources, to my immersive experience operational showcase. Believe a great team is taking shape. This is a win-win-win for NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration - U.S. Department of Transportation - Federal Aviation Administration.
Super excited to partner with Joby Aviation to host their simulator on campus until March 5 where already nearly 300 students, industry partners and elected officials from across the region have flown this high-tech, quiet, four-person air taxi. Joby is an amazing partner deeply committed to building a workforce pipeline that will serve the burgeoning field of electric vertical lift and takeoff vehicles coming to NYC. So goes NY, so goes the world! #vaughnconnections #jobyaviation

Today’s challenge: Name one other industry where people spend tens of thousands to be considered for a job, after already spending hundreds of thousands for the initial training! 💸 Introducing: Pay to Fly From paying for your own interview, your line training, to entire type ratings: Many operators are living the dream! ☀️ Sounds pretty insane right? Yep, we agree! So now what? Why is this considered ‘appropriate’ if you want to become a pilot? Why is it acceptable for employers to charge pilots for their own company training, and what is the dark side of all of this that no one wants to talk about? We take a dive into all of this in our latest article, check it out here: https://lnkd.in/e3NNxsRu What’s your experience with Pay to Fly? Let us know!
