As a partner to many small cities in Minnesota, we have compiled some practical tips for reducing city staff turnover and keeping great employees. What else would you add?

In a recent conversation with the CEO of a prominent NSW local council, they shared insightful perspectives around talent attraction and accessibility, particularly beneficial for smaller councils. Key insights included: --Emphasising unique value propositions to attract talent particularly from the commercial sector, where perceptions of working for a local council may be less appealing. --Promoting the appeal of steady income and flexibility for individuals with young families, attributes that local councils can offer more readily than a lot of corporate environments. --Adopting outcome-based hiring practices, enabling professionals transitioning from the private sector to potentially work fewer hours for a full-time salary, aligning with agreed and desired outcomes. --Removing constraints for local council staff to engage in additional income streams. --Facilitating access for smaller councils to a pool of experienced professionals through an "employment concierge" model, allowing them to leverage expertise without needing to hire. Which metros in North Carolina have the highest concentration of Leisure and Hospitality employment? Answer: Asheville comes in first with 14.9% of its jobs being in the L&H and Wilmington comes in second with 13.7% of jobs in the sector. The myth about Wilmington is that the majority of the jobs are in L&H but the importance of the sector has been declining and that of Healthcare/Professional and Business has been increasing. “Of note, Melbourne still faces stiff challenges. The Victorian Government simply has to get some of its workforce back a few days a week to support what must again be a thriving city,” 😳 My goodness. Really? ‘Bring them all back’. The Property Council of Australia does some great work, but going to print with this as a ‘solution’ to a rising office vacancy rate represents archaic thinking. Surely the property industry has more to offer than relying on mandates as a fix for a rising vacancy rate? There has been a structural shift in demand brought about by changes in work practices that are never going to revert to how they were in the past, so it’s time for the industry to start serving the customer significantly better to generate demand, and stop harking back to the days when there was a captive market which had no choice but to use the product being peddled. #futureofwork

Is there a scenario where transparency in local government is ill-advised? Should the public have the right to know who all the candidates are for a City Manager role? Does this transparency negatively impact attracting a large candidate pool? The following article highlights two concurrent City Manager searches in Florida (New Smyrna Beach and Treasure Island). Due to Florida law allowing the names of all candidates to be made public at an early stage in the recruitment process, the news has identified James Slaton as a candidate for both communities as well as identifying other semi-finalists and alternates candidates. My take is that the value of the transparency sought here is significantly outweighed by the damage it does to potential candidates and the hesitancy of employed City Managers to check out these opportunities. The vetting and scrutiny of these candidates needs to be handled by the recruitment firm and the elected officials. Having the public watching the process to me provides no value to the decision making process and reeks of gossiping and reality TV.
