"We have to continue showing up every election, particularly for off-year and local elections, where these changes to our voting systems are often on the ballot. And we must demand that our elected officials push for systemic change to ensure everyone who is eligible to vote can." Ever wonder how a country where the vast majority of people support abortion access keeps passing such ugly abortion bans? Renee Bracey Sherman and Regina Mahone have answers (and they promise this #gerrymandering discussion won’t put you to sleep)! In the latest episode of #TheAFiles, Renee and Regina explain the link between voter suppression, racism, and abortion bans—and LaTosha Brown at #BlackVotersMatter joins to explain what’s really happening across the country, and what we can all do about it. In a new Op-Ed for Teen Vogue, Phoebe Gates highlights some of Change Research's recent polling showing the impact of reproductive freedom on young voters in particular: - Our recent Teen Vogue x Change Research poll found that 60% of young women say they are or would be more motivated to move to another state now that or if theirs passed an abortion ban. - In our May 2023 poll for Reproductive Freedom for All (formerly NARAL Pro-Choice America), 73% of voters said abortion bans had gone too far and that politicians should stop interfering with decisions about reproductive care. When Gen-Z shows up to the polls in the name of reproductive freedom, we win. In the post-Roe world, millions of Americans are still living under extreme abortion bans and under politicians who are determined to take away individual choice. But that won’t deter us — and the wins in Ohio, Virginia, and Kentucky elections last week showed us that, if anything, it only serves as motivation. In Teen Vogue, I reflect on the 2023 elections and how we can keep this momentum going into 2024. Check out my full op-ed below ⭐ https://lnkd.in/e6h8enw7

"On 7 November, voters in Ohio passed Issue 1 - legislation which establishes a constitutional right to abortion in the state. This outcome is considered a significant win for women’s rights groups and activists across the US following the reversal of Roe vs Wade in 2022. This vote follows recent ballots in other states such as California, Michigan, and Vermont where voters passed similar amendments to enshrine abortion rights within state constitutions. Misinformation, dangerous rhetoric, and inflammatory language were prevalent in the run up to the vote. One particular source was a blog run from the Ohio, Republican controlled, State Senate website named, ‘On the Record’. Launched in September 2023, the blog describes itself as a ‘online newsroom’ and provides editorials, opinion pieces and articles by Republican state senators. During campaigning for Issue 1, the website published pieces on abortion that were highly misleading or contained false narratives, including one piece by a state senator who claimed that Issue 1 would "allow for the dismemberment of fully conscious children". Supporters of Issue 1 have raised concerns about On the Record’s content being hosted by an official government website, as voters may interpret information hosted on this page as objective information. Mary Ruth Ziegler, a law professor at the University of California has stated that the On the Record blog "crosses a line" as it blurs the distinction between a government website used for impartial information versus an online blog used for a political agenda. In the upcoming 2024 US Presidential election, misinformation and false narratives are almost certain to play a significant role in the information environment. The same tactics employed by Ohio Republicans will likely be adopted in other local government elections; giving those in power an upper hand and an easy way to deliver misinformation straight into the hands of voters. Threat actors could also adopt these tactics, to clone government websites and mislead voters. While Issue 1 has been hailed a success for abortion rights, the information environment that surrounds it might have something new to teach us about the weaponisation of misinformation, especially during a critical vote." - Laura M., Digital Investigations Analyst https://lnkd.in/eSdBhQ3r #misinformation #informationenvironment #Issue1 #womensrights #elections #localgovernment #unitedstates

The 2022 Supreme Court decision to eliminate a nationwide right to abortion was a moment of triumph for conservatives who labored to overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling, however, it also deepened the cultural divide between conservative and liberal states. Republican officials have since moved quickly to impose stricter bans that now stand in nearly half of the 50 states, a development celebrated by conservatives but that has turned off some party moderates, particularly women. President Joe Biden's re-election campaign and Democratic-aligned groups intend to put abortion rights at the center of next year's White House contest. Here’s everything you need to know about the impact abortion could have on the 2024 US presidential elections 👉 https://reut.rs/3uY6fN0 #abortionrights #uselections #scotus #publicpolicy #litigation
