As a platform for new perspectives and points of view, the festival facilitates a colourful and diverse dialogue that puts responsibility before profits and focuses on the potential for human development, with everyone in society committed to or standing up for the common good. As a digitally diverse society, we are threatened by complex issues and worsening crises that require multidimensional solutions. To meet future challenges, we will need a society that promotes solidarity, public advocacy, and civic engagement rather than one geared toward growth and success. Re: publica takes on these challenges with great curiosity and playful joy, leaving space for positive developments and innovation. So whether we are optimistic or worried, the question is clear: WHO CARES? #rp24

(Honestly, when Matthias told me that people are asking him about this more than they did about the "official" events...I was rolling my eyes. Then, I saw it too 🤩 - the light!! ❤️Absolutely love this ❤️- not only from the obvious perspective of ensuring and gaining assistance when your older but, in a era where the social impact of technology is not yet know, it allows: - a focus on kindness ☺️ - person to person contact 👵 - knowledge sharing across generations ⁉️ - insight into what an older life may look like 🧐 - reduction in anxiety of growing older 🌷 -new skills outside of traditional ‘job’ 🔨 - a focus on future planning and consequences ⏱️ And no doubt so much more. Let’s hope the UK starts to learn from these other countries who have an experimental mindset! When is the programme for a conference or roundtable or gathering or confab really ready? When it first appears online? Rarely. When it is published in a print conference magazine? Closer but you wouldn't want to plan your not-to-be-missed sessions by it. When you arrive at the venue and see the running order on a screen? Admittedly, you're getting warmer but even then, there are traffic snarl-ups and room mix-ups which mean that even you can't bet the house on the TV screen agenda being accurate. So when then can you get the really, nailed-down accurate itinerary? After the event, of course. I have been reminded of that truism of conference organising as we reach the final furlong of preparing the agenda for the Irish Roundtable in the Magic City which is earmarked for Birmingham, AL on 9-10 October 2024. Every time, over the past few weeks, that I have signed off on the agenda and rushed it to our graphic art impresario, I have had to beat a retreat and make more changes. All that said, I am happy to state, hand on heart, that the final agenda, or a version thereof, will go live on Friday (btw there is already a first version online). My holdouts are a cracking business speaker from Chicago and a certain elected official (senior, with chain, but no names). Both are keen to be there but neither is a Padre Pio with the gift of bilocation so we may not get them to the Magic City this time out. For now, though I am buoyed by the support of our panel chairs including Will Blackburn (below), a young AI start-up star from Birmingham who moved to Atlanta for a while in search of opportunity but decided to return home "to be part of the solution". Well put. I have the same attitude to our work in Belfast - I just didn't have the correct words to convey our mission.
