We encourage and accept self-nominations. You can nominate in two main categories: 🌟𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫 - A Black entrepreneur or professional with exceptional performance in their business, a leader amongst their peers and exceeding expectations as a culture carrier - the one to watch. The nominee should be aged 35 or under on 30 June 2024. 💡𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫 - An outstanding Black entrepreneur or senior professional who industry observers recognise as an expert in their field. A senior manager operating at a strategic level in their business, leading significant populations, projects, budgets and/or product lines. A role model, inspiration and game changer. It’s the first Monday of Black History Month! And since we have shortest month of the year to celebrate all that is Black and beautiful (personally, I celebrate all year long), I didn’t want to wait too long without a proper acknowledgement. This month, I'm recognizing some of the Black colleagues, mentors, and friends who have supported me throughout my career. I’ve learned and grown because of their honest advice and powerful support. I started writing out a list and there are so many people that I’m grouping them by industry and will share a new batch every week. What a “problem” to have! ✍🏽 Starting off the month strong - here are just a few in venture capital who helped me navigate the space. Arlan Hamilton - Arlan has broken so many barrier and built an incredible portal of access and opportunity with Backstage Capital. The firm has been the first check into many a company of underestimated founders. I was honored to have been part of the team. Brian Hollins and Aaron Samuels - Brian and Aaron raised a debut fund of $66M to start Collide Capital which invests in early-stage companies with a focus on founders building transformational enterprise SaaS, supply chain infrastructure, and Gen-Z minded consumer software. Both have impressive track records and I was honored to have been introduced to them by multiple people in my network. Megan Holston-Alexander - Megan is a powerhouse investor at a16z’s Cultural Leadership Fund and co-founder of @When Founder Met Funder, a program geared to introducing Black female founders to investors. I got to partner with the WFMF team for an event and it was such a joy seeing the connections made. Sydney Paige Thomas - I’ll never forget meeting Sydney through All Raise and how incredibly thoughtful she was in assessing our goals as part of the MarComm working group. She’s now investing out of her newly launched fund, Symphonic Capital, focused on pre-seed companies. I don’t run a Fortune 500 or even a Fortune 1000 or Fortune 2000 company. Nor do I run a sexy tech company with a $1B value. However, I have had the great fortune of running a small company that provides terrific value to the latter. And, like those companies, we too have core values we adhere to, which also happen to align nicely with my personal values and code of conduct. They are as follows: Trust--do what we say we will do. Authenticity--don't lie to yourself. Integrity--do the right thing, always, even if it means sacrificing revenue. Empathy--seek to understand, even if you've never experienced the other person's circumstance/s. Caring--do something/anything to help. Lead--be clear and decisive without fear. Passion--do things with a strong desire to get them done even if they're hard or boring. Optimism--things will get better, but not on their own. Joy--laugh, smile, and have fun when things go well. It’s okay to celebrate wins out loud. Enthusiasm-it's contagious, so share it when you feel it. Transparency--be honest and don't hold back even if the response will be unfavorable or fraught with fear or anger. Drive--pursue greatness for the sake of greatness. It's long-term thinking and goes beyond short-term motivation. Last year was certainly tougher than most, and never had we had to rely on our core values more, but of all that we were still fortunate enough to accomplish, the thing that makes me the most proud is that we didn't compromise any of our values--even if it meant forgoing significant income in some cases. So, as we celebrate the start of a new year and look forward to all the winning, we will celebrate that we did it, and will continue to do it--with our value system very much intact. I hope I'm not alone in that. Happy 2024! Now let's get back in the black!

AFROTECH the largest black tech conference, brought thousands of Black professionals together to not only celebrate our successes but to impel the agenda to increase the representation of the black and brown people in the Tech industries. And I can say nothing is more stimulating then this. I had the wonderful opportunity to be in the presences of creative thinkers, technologists, innovators,and the leaders of tomorrow. Being surrounded by high level intelligence and intrigued in organic conversations is a quality experience. I am honored to have been selected to represent Deloitte one of the #afrotech sponsors, and share my work experience and inspire others who desire to take a similar path. 🔥 Celebrating Black Business Month: Bridging the Gap! 🔥 August is Black Business Month. I haven't seen many posts about it. Perhaps the embers have cooled since 2020, but I want to shed light on the remarkable contributions of Black-owned businesses and the challenges we face in accessing funding and resources. Studies reveal that Black entrepreneurs receive significantly less venture capital funding compared to their non-Black counterparts. In fact, Black-founded startups receive just a fraction of the investment dollars, despite demonstrating incredible innovation and potential. This funding gap has far-reaching consequences, limiting growth opportunities and stifling economic empowerment. 💰 But fear not – each of us can make a difference! Here's how: 🌐 **Consumers**: Be intentional about your purchasing choices. Seek out Black-owned businesses in your community or online. By buying from them, you directly contribute to their growth and success. Whether it's fashion, tech, beauty, or food, there's a Black-owned business for everyone! 🏦 **Bankers & Funders**: Let's break down barriers together! Increase your support for Black entrepreneurs by providing equitable access to capital and financial guidance. Investing in these businesses not only fuels their growth but also strengthens our economy as a whole. 🛍️ **Procurement Managers**: Diversify your supply chain! Actively include Black-owned businesses as suppliers. By doing so, you promote inclusivity and create a more level playing field, fostering innovation and competition. 🤝 **Collaboration**: Networks are powerful tools. Form partnerships with organizations that support Black businesses. Whether through mentorship programs, workshops, or funding initiatives, your collaboration can be a game-changer. Did you know August is National Black Business Month? This is a time for celebrating and recognizing the significant impact that Black entrepreneurs and business owners have on their communities, the economy, and the country as a whole. Let's uplift and recognize their incredible contributions! At Mill Cities Community Investments Foundation for Business Equity, we take pride in our support for numerous exceptional Black business owners and entrepreneurs. One such outstanding example is the innovative tech and consulting company, Quality Means Business (QBM) and Business Equity Initiative (BEI) participant. We asked QBM's CEO, Michel E.
