How has working in the London Market shaped Matt Osterhaudt's perspective on life? "While still in college, I had the good fortune to spend a semester abroad in England. It was an eye-opening experience. Once I started working with London-based clients, I had, and continue to have, the opportunity to regularly travel to England. The more I travel there, the more it's reinforced that we have many common values. People generally want to excel in their chosen field, feel valued, and help others. Those working in the London market epitomize this. The risks that are underwritten in London allow businesses across the globe to flourish and prosper. Working with clients in London has allowed me to see beyond the borders of the US and provided me with a greater appreciation for cultures and events around the world." Brexit was probably an indirect cause as it forced "London-obsessively-centered" firms to accomodate and accept relocations and, at the same time, it forced some employees to decide where to go next (even though Brexit relocations were mainly to the EU, it effectively opens up a world of possibilities). My story is identical to the above, but instead of Dubai my firm allowed me to relocate to Madrid when Brexit was still a twinkle in Mr. Farage's eye! I traded career progression in investment banking for a second-to-none quality of life in a senior but stagnant banking role. To this day, it was the second best decision of my life. In a post-Covid world where what really matters to many people has fundamentally changed, quality of life has become a lot more valuable than money for many (look at the fenomenal response to Citi's new banking office in Malaga of all places, JPM's Bournemouth office or Goldman's expanding office in Birmingham). Ironically, Brexit jump-started my career again when my firm selected Madrid as its EU hub and dozens of relocated professionals validated this same quality of life argument. But that is a very sad ending story for another time...

When I was 21, I boarded a plane to London, with 2 months notice. Normally, I am the one who has the travel itinerary typed out full with links and copies of confirmations, however this decision there was a strong feeling that this was the right next step for me. With two phone numbers, $2,000 in my bank account, no job lined up and accommodation for a single month, I landed at Heathrow buzzing with excitement to discover what this adventure would bring. Mission One: Securing A Role I became a familiar face at the local internet cafe as I researched recruitment agencies and lined up interviews sending off my CV saved on my iPod. It didn't take long (week two) and I had secured a position at Rothschild & Co, an investment bank located right in the heart of the city. Mission Two: A Place To Call Home If you have ever travel the journey from London to Brighton you will know that the 3-4 hour return trip was not sustainable long term. With my mind focused it didn't take long (week three) to find a tiny room in a huge shared house in Clapham. Yes I had to masking tape the blinds to the window frames to keep the cold November weather out and the best thing about the house was the water pressure, however it supported me in my next mission. Mission Three: Finding My People Being new to a big city, this was my next focus and it didn't take long (week four) after joining the Rothschild Social Club (that I later became the Chairman) the invitations to join for afterwork drinks at The Vintry arrived in my inbox. For the following six years I was so fortunate to have the most amazing experiences, made lifelong friendships, worked for two great companies (Rothschild & Co & Macquarie Group) and I met my wonderful husband Simon Smith. Being back in Melbourne for 14 years this year and as I look back at the decision to move across the world, it never at any moment felt like it was a big thing. Every mission I undertake before and since this move has provided the same experience, where my energies are focused, results follow. #businessoperations #focusedactions

Time flies! It's hard to believe that it's been almost 2 years now since we launched Law Squared in London, our first overseas office💂♀️. Expanding to a new market is a huge undertaking for any business and we are no exception. It’s been the most rewarding, challenging and eye-opening experience of my career. We work with a lot of companies and founders on a similar journey, so I want to share some of the highlights and challenges of our journey so far, and what we have learned along the way. What we did well: ✅ Leveraging our existing Australian network. We were fortunate to have a strong base of clients and contacts in Australia who supported us in our expansion. They referred us to their UK counterparts, introduced us to potential partners and made connections to other Aussies in London. ✅Leveraging partnerships with values-aligned partners on the ground in London. We knew that we couldn't do it alone, so we sought out partners that shared our vision and values, and worked within our target markets. ✅ Being consistent and on the ground. We made sure that we had a physical presence in London, with (very) regular visits from our founder, Demetrio, and other members of our team. We also maintained a consistent brand identity and message across both markets, while working to adapt where necessary to the specific needs, experiences and preferences of our UK clients. ✅ Taking time to learn the local market. We didn't assume that what worked in Australia would work in the UK. We spent time researching the market, talking to potential clients, understanding their pain points and expectations, and tailoring our solutions and messaging accordingly. Our challenges: ❌ Under-estimating time to establish. We were optimistic about how quickly we could grow our client base and team in London, but we soon realised that it would take longer than we expected. The UK legal market is highly competitive, saturated and complex, and it takes time to build trust and credibility in market. We and our partners recommend an 18-month runway to businesses expanding to London. ❌ Under-estimating size and complexity of London market. It’s hard as Australians and an Australian business to comprehend the sheer scale of London and the economic activity here. While we new it was a busy and dynamic place, we weren’t prepared for just how complex and crowded the London market is. ❌ Not being aware of potential cultural differences when starting out in UK. We thought that because we spoke the same language and had similar legal systems, there wouldn't be much difference between Australia and the UK in terms of business culture. However, we soon found out that there were subtle but significant differences in communication styles, expectations, etiquette and humour that we had to adjust to. I’m an open book so please feel free to reach out if you have any questions, or just want to vent about expanding to or operating in London.

Every day, across Britain, hospitality creates places where people want to live, work and invest. It is an inclusive employer of 3.5 million people, providing routes into leadership and skilled careers across the country and society. It builds – and rebuilds – communities, acting as an economic and social focal point for regeneration. It is a powerhouse that contributes £140 billion in economic activity and £54 billion in tax receipts to the economy every year. There is no doubt that today hospitality is #ServingBritain. Our policy recommendations can unlock the potential of the sector to make the most impact at the lowest cost. We know that in the first months of a new parliament a government will want to make an early impact, as well as achieving long term and lasting change. These recommendations can be delivered over the first 100 days, the first 100 weeks, and the whole parliamentary term. #ServingBritain Allen Simpson Kate Nicholls OBE

Celebrating the UK's living heritage: The timeless value of family businesses In the heart of our bustling cities and the serene countryside, the UK’s family businesses stand as living testaments to our enduring cultural heritage. These establishments – from historical family-run shops to traditional pubs and long-standing manufacturers – are not merely commercial entities but are intricately woven into the very fabric of our society. 🏰🛍️ Tourists from around the globe are often found marveling at these storied venues, which offer more than just services or products; they offer authentic experiences that embody the spirit of British tradition and resilience. As business leaders and community members, we must recognise the significant role these family enterprises play not only in our economy but in preserving a rich legacy that dates back generations. They are custodians of craftsmanship, hospitality and the unwritten stories of our collective history. Let’s champion these pillars of our communities. When we support family businesses, we’re not just making a purchase; we’re contributing to a narrative that extends well beyond the transaction – we’re helping to keep the essence of British culture vibrant and alive for the visitors who come to experience it and for the generations yet to come. 👉 Here’s to family businesses across the UK: may we continue to embrace and celebrate your contribution to our heritage and economy. #FamilyBusiness #UKHeritage #SupportLocal #BritishCulture #BusinessCommunity
